Microsoft Remote Installation Services

Microsoft Remote Installation Services (RIS) is a component of Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2003 Server that supports PXE booting. It can be used to perform a standard Windows XP wizard-based install over the network using an image created on the server by running the Risetup.exe tool. RIS can also install a preconfigured initial load client over the network, using an image captured by running the Riprep.exe tool on an installed and configured Windows XP client. The steps recommended by Microsoft are:

  1. Use Risetup to create a base image on the RIS server
  2. Install the base image on a client machine by PXE-booting from the RIS server
  3. Install and configure additional software to form the prototype initial client software load.
  4. Use Riprep on the client to capture its image onto the RIS server
  5. Install the captured image on other client hardware by PXE-booting from the RIS server
Tip: Additional information about RIS is available by searching for the terms "Windows XP RIS" on the Microsoft Web site http://www.microsoft.com
