When to retrieve external content

When you configure a content connection, you must specify when the system retrieves content from the FTP server, web server, or RSS feed. Connections in email messages can retrieve content when the email communication is published or when the email message is sent. Connections in landing pages can retrieve content only when the landing page communication is published.

Consider the following questions when you specify content retrieval time.

  • What type of content are you connecting to?
  • How often does the content change? If so, how often?
  • When will the message be sent?

To ensure that an email message contains the latest content, configure the connection to retrieve content when the message is sent. When you select this option for email sent in a standard mailing, the system retrieves the latest content from the source immediately before the mailing runs. This option is available only for connections in email messages.

Note: Connections in transactional email that are configured to retrieve content when the message is sent actually retrieve content when the mailing is enabled for transactional email.

If you configure the connection to retrieve content when you publish the communication, the system adds content that was current when you last published the communication. Connections in hosted landing pages retrieve content only when you publish the landing page communication. This option is not available for connections to RSS feeds.

If the external content that you specify in a content connection is likely to change, plan content retrieval times carefully. This is especially true for landing pages and for connections in email that retrieve content when the message is published. If your content changes more often than you publish communications, you risk sending or displaying outdated content.

Planning for content connections must always compare how often the content changes to how often you send messages that contain the external content.
