External content in transactional email messages

Transactional email messages can contain external text or HTML content. To include external content in transactional email, add content connections to the email communication that is referenced in a mailing that you enable for transactional email. If the external content might change, you must take precautions to ensure that the message includes the correct version of the content.

For transactional email, content connections retrieve the external content from the server when you enable the mailing for transactional email, not each time that you send or publish the email.

  • For connections that retrieve content when the message is sent, the connections retrieve content from the server when you enable the mailing for transactional email.
  • For connections that retrieve content when the email is published, you must publish the communication before you enable the mailing for transactional email.

If the mailing is already enabled for transactional email when you retrieve new content from the server, you must disable and re-enable the mailing for transactional email to include the new content in transactional email messages.

Note: You cannot include external content from an RSS feed in an email message that is enabled for transactional email.
