Freezing rows and columns in spreadsheets

When a spreadsheet is very long or wide, you can freeze table headers or other contents and make them visible on the screen all the time by using the Freeze Rows and Freeze Columns commands.

About this task

You cannot freeze columns that contain only part of a merged cell. In addition, images and charts that span the frozen area and unfrozen area are hidden. To freeze or unfreeze rows or columns, do one of the following:

Procedure

  • Click View > Freeze Rows and then select the number of rows that you want to freeze.
  • Click View > Freeze Columns and then select the number of columns that you want to freeze.
  • Click View > Freeze Rows > No Frozen Rows.
  • Click View > Freeze Columns > No Frozen Columns.
Tip: To add more rows or columns to a frozen area, hover over the freeze bar until the mouse pointer changes to a hand, and drag the bar to the position that you want.
