Configuring browser settings for users

About this task

We support the Proxy Auto Configuration (PAC) file and manual proxy settings for browsers. The audio video plugin reads these browser settings and sets the HTTP proxy host and port required for audio and video.

On Microsoft™ Windows™, the Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari browsers use the System Proxy Settings.

On Macintosh, the Safari browser uses System Proxy Settings. Note that Chrome is not supported on the Mac.

Procedure

Set the necessary browser proxy settings by completing these steps according to the computer and browser you are using:
  1. In your browser settings, ensure that the setting Automatically detect Proxy settings is NOT enabled. Only PAC file and manual proxy settings for all browsers are supported.
  2. On Mozilla Firefox, specify PAC file or manual proxy settings by completing these steps:
    1. Click Tools > Options > Network.
    2. In the Connections section, click Settings.
    3. Do one of these:
      • From the Connection Settings page, click Automatic proxy configuration URL and specify the PAC file URL provided by the administrator. The PAC file url can be the remote PAC file URL (http://) or the local PAC file URL file://
      • From the Connection Settings page, click Manual proxy configuration and then enter the HTTP proxy and port provided by the administrator.
  3. Tell users that in Mozilla Firefox they can choose the Use System Proxy Settings option so that the proxy settings configured on the system are used.
  4. Users can edit their system settings by completing these steps:
    Windows
    • Navigate to the Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings.
    • On Internet Explorer , navigate to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings.
    • Choose one of these:
      • To use a PAC file, click Use automatic Configuration script and enter the URL provided by the administrator.
      • To use manual settings, click Use a proxy server for this connection, and enter the address and port provided by the administrator.
    Mac
    • Navigate to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies.
    • On Safari, navigate to Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > Change Settings .
    • Do one of these:
      • To use a PAC file, under Select a protocol to configure, select Automatic Proxy Configuration. In the Proxy Configuration File URL field, specify the URL provided by the administrator.
      • To manual settings, under Select a protocol to configure, select Web Proxy (HTTP). In the Web Proxy Server fields enter the URL and port number provided by the administrator.
