Deploying SIP trunking

SIP trunking allows IBM® Sametime® users to make SIP-based phone calls from their installed Sametime clients.

About this task

SIP trunking enables your organization's telephone PBX to support phone calls that use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). When you configure SIP trunking in Sametime, the Media Manager overlays your data connection to the Internet with a voice connection that is provided through the Sametime client's softphone.

In a Sametime deployment, SIP trunking requires the use of the Sametime Media Manager to route SIP-based calls. If you want to enable users with installed clients to make SIP-based calls without involving the Media Manager, consider enabling First Party Call Control.

Deploying SIP trunking requires that you enable the feature, configure Sametime to route outgoing calls to the appropriate SIP endpoints, and then configure each SIP endpoint to route incoming calls to Sametime. Complete the following tasks to enable and configure SIP trunking for your Sametime deployment.
