Deploying an IBM SIP Edge Proxy server to support audio and video in the extranet

The IBM® SIP Edge Proxy server is a SIP application installed over an IBM WebSphere® Application Server. Since there is no specific installer for the IBM SIP Edge Proxy server, you use the IBM Sametime® Media Manager's SIP Proxy/Registrar installer, and then perform manual steps to configure the IBM SIP Edge Proxy server. Read the system requirements to ensure that you know the minimum supported software requirements.

About this task

The IBM SIP Edge Proxy server connects external clients to the Sametime SIP Proxy/Registrar server. Both external and internal clients receive a host name for the SIP Proxy/Registrar. For internal clients, this host name should resolve to the IP address of the Sametime Media Manager's SIP Proxy/Registrar deployed in the corporate intranet, enabling internal clients to connect directly. For external clients, the host name should resolve to the IP address of the IBM SIP Edge Proxy server deployed in the DMZ. Use a split-horizon DNS to provide these different sets of DNS information to clients based on the source address of the DNS request.

The IBM SIP Edge Proxy and the Sametime SIP Proxy/Registrar servers communicate with each other over SIP ports. Therefore, SIP ports must be opened in the firewall in both directions. In addition, both servers must be able to resolve the FQDN of each other.

Use the procedures in this section to install either the stand-alone SIP Edge Proxy server or clustered SIP Edge Proxy servers.
