Personalization
Personalization can recognize a specific site visitor based on a profile. It can also determine characteristics of a user based on previous purchases, products or pages viewed, or other attributes. If a visitor belongs to a particular geographic region, content specific to that region can be targeted to the visitor. The page is assembled with the personalized information, and the visitor sees a personalized page.
Personalization
Personalization allows a portal or website to choose which content appears for particular site visitors. For example, a site that uses Personalization can show different news articles to managers than to regular employees, or different information to valued customers.

        Adding pages, content, and more
        As a content author, your goal is to visualize the best way to organize information on your site with pages and content. You might need to create a section in the site for a new product or you might want to change the arrangement of pages in the navigation based on customer feedback. Either way, you always start with a project and end with publishing your updates.
        Configure your content spot
        The Configure Spot feature provides a convenient place for selecting the type of content to display in a web content viewer. You can target content to segments, display content with page context, or select a specific content item for the spot.

        Use the web content authoring portlet and inline editing tools to create and manage web content items.
        Personalization

        Content that you personalize
        You can personalize specific content spots of your intranet and internet website. For example, you can personalize a list of new articles that appears on the website based on the visitors geographical location. You can personalize employee bulletins for specific groups of employees, such as changes to benefit plans. You can personalize a product list on a commerce website.
        Creating a business rule
        Rules are used to define how your website interacts with individuals and groups of site visitors. Rules are composed of easy-to-read logic statements that specify how to evaluate conditions and what actions to take.
        Link the rule to a content spot on your site
        A content spot is a placeholder for a personalization rule on a web page. When you create a content spot, you associate a business rule with it. This association is referred to as mapping or linking the personalization rule to a content spot.
        Publish your rules to production
        You can publish selected rules or the full workspaces from the personalization navigator. Before you publish, you must define the publishing server.
        Personalization
        Personalization allows a portal or website to choose which content appears for particular site visitors. For example, a site that uses Personalization can show different news articles to managers than to regular employees, or different information to valued customers.
        Personalization objects
        Personalization is controlled by the following types of objects: rules, campaigns, rule mapping, rule events, content spots, resource collections, application objects, and publish server.
        Types of rules
        There are seven types of rules that you can create with personalization: select content, update, profiler (also called segment) binding, email, recommended content, and visibility.
        Rule elements
        The following are rule elements for portal or website personalization.
        Access control for personalization objects
        If you work with Personalization, you have a role that is assigned to you. This role defines the tasks that you can do. You might be able to personalize folders and files, or you might have read-only access. You might also have the highest level of control, the administrative role that gives you permission to determine who has access to certain objects.
        Creating and editing personalization campaigns
        Campaigns are a means of organizing and implementing sets of personalization behavior within websites or as part of email promotions. A useful analogy is an advertising campaign that targets specific audiences with high priority information for a specified time. Use campaigns to preferentially display campaign-related content in the Content spots of a website, sending directed email with campaign-specific information to a group of email recipients, or both. To accomplish such a goal, a campaign contains a set of rule-to-content spot mappings, start dates, and stop dates, and optionally, email promotions.
        Creating personalization content spots
        A content spot is a placeholder or slot for a rule on a web page or a rule in the body of an email message. When the page is viewed, the content spot uses its rule mapping to determine which rule to run. When the rule is run, any actions that are defined within the rule take place.
        Creating a rule
        Rules define how content spots respond based on the site visitor.
        Creating a rule event
        Every time that the rule event fires, Personalization collects the users through the first rule. Then, Personalization runs the second rule for each user in the user that is set from the first rule. To create a rule event, you must have a rule that selects certain users from a resource collection. For example, users between the ages of 25 and 35. You must have a rule to serve as the rule event.
        Creating and editing a rule mapping
        Rule mappings can be changed at any time and are effective immediately upon publication or upon the spot mapping start date, whichever comes later. Rule mappings expire on the rule mapping end date.
        Creating and editing resource collections
        When you create a resource collection, you must assign it a unique name. That name must be unique among all of the resource collections in the current workspace. Renaming a resource collection that has rules that are created against it prevents the Personalization engine from correctly running those rules.
        Creating and editing application objects
        Application objects, along with resource collections, are Personalization authoring tools that are used for creating and implementing rules. Application objects make rules available to the rule author. They are available as an HTTP session. An application object is a current object, whereas a resource collection is not current and exists in a data store.
        Exporting and importing Personalization objects
        You can export a Personalization object to your local file system, and then import the Personalization object into the Personalization Navigator. For example, you might want to import a Personalization object into the Personalization Navigator to back up the Personalization object or to export the object to another server. Any item that you can select from the Personalization Navigator is an example of a Personalization object.
        Versions
        If versions are active, you can save your object under a unique version number, which provides a linear history of your object's changes. Use versions also to retrieve an earlier version of an object. In addition to saving your object as a new version, you can promote a previous object version to the current version.
        Personalized list
        The Personalized List portlet allows a user to display personalized content without having to build a custom JSP portlet.
        Creating a publish server
        Follow the steps to create a publish server from the Personalization Navigator.
        Search Center
        Use the Search Center to search for documents.

        As an administrator, you can manage access to resources in the website, deploy new applications, and more.
      - Directory structure
        The topic shows the naming conventions that are used to denote the location of files on the servers and the types of resources you can find in those directories.
      - Configuration Wizard
        You installed your HCL Digital Experience software. Now let the Configuration Wizard guide you through configuring your system. To begin, select a configuration option and provide basic input about your environment. Based on this information, the Configuration Wizard provides you with examples, recommended values, customized instructions, and scripts that you can run.
  - Installing
    HCL Digital Experience provides flexible deployment options that range from proof-of-concept where you can examine and test functionality to a highly available and scalable production environment. Review the planning information to learn more about hardware and software requirements, high availability, scalability, supported topologies, and much more. Select your operating system and then select the installation pattern that most reflects your business needs.
  - Configuring
    Run the following tasks after you install and deploy HCL Digital Experience. They address tasks that are typically run one time and have a global effect. Some configuration changes are made more frequently or do not have a global effect. These tasks are addressed in the Administering section.
  - Backup and restore
    Backup and recovery of data files and databases is an essential operation for any business system, particularly for data and applications that run in production environments. Create and follow a plan for backing up and recovering data on all tiers of your HCL Digital Experience deployment. IBM Installation Manager must also be included in backup and recovery planning. If you back up the HCL Portal file structure and then install a fix pack, your HCL Digital Experience and IBM Installation Manager become out of sync after you restore the HCL Portal file system. This condition is not recoverable.
  - Migrating
    Successful migration requires significant planning and preparation, understanding the tools that are involved, and careful execution of the appropriate steps in the order provided.
  - Integrating
    Integrate HCL Digital Experience with software such as HCL Sametime to enable your users to collaborate more easily. You can also use the unified task list portlet to integrate HCL with your backend business process software, such as IBM Process Server.
  - Administering
    Use the administration tools that are provided with the portal to do various day-to-day administration tasks. There are two methods for editing portal setup: using the administration portlets or the XML configuration interface. The administration portlets are a convenient way to make real-time updates to the portal's configuration. While the XML configuration interface is suited to more advanced administration, including batch processing of updates.
  - Securing
    Security tasks include setting up property extension databases and custom user repositories, configuring and activating SSL, and configuring authentication. In addition, tasks such as activating Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) and NIST SP800-131a security modules and configuring external security managers such as Security Access Manager might be required to secure your portal environment.
  - Monitoring
    HCL Portal includes tools and features to help you monitor the portal site.
  - Setting up a website
    Setting up a website includes, creating pages, adding navigation, setting up search, and adding content to the site. Themes are used to customize the portal's look-and-feel. Out-of-the-box templates and the site wizard can help you set up your portal site faster. You can add wikis and blogs to your site and let users tag and rate content on your site.
  - Staging to production
    During portal solution development, the solution is initially developed, tested, and refined on one server or a limited number of servers. The solution is deployed later on live systems, referred to as the production environment. The process of moving the solution from the development environment to the production environment is called staging.

Creating a rule | HCL Digital Experience

Rules define how content spots respond based on the site visitor.

Procedure

From the Personalization Navigator, click New > Rule.
Provide a name, location, and description for the rule.
Select the type of rule.
To edit rule elements, click the element name.

What to do next

You can preview rules with the Preview tab. When you preview a rule, you are previewing as yourself. If you are not included in the target audience for the rule, then the rule fails to find a user resource for you. Depending on the resource and the rule, it might result in no results or an error.

Each rule has metadata that you can view and edit. Select the Document Info tab. The title, document type, description, last modified date, and date that is created is displayed.
