Application management

Application management in BigFix MCM enables IT admins to centrally control, distribute, and maintain Windows and macOS applications. It allows IT administrators to streamline the deployment, update, and security of apps on enrolled devices.

App Deployment

  • BigFix MCM can deploy and manage applications on Windows and Apple devices. This includes installing, updating, and uninstalling applications remotely.
  • On macOS devices, BigFix MCM can deploy apps using Apple's Volume Purchase Program (VPP). This enables organizations to purchase apps in volume and distribute them to devices centrally.
  • BigFix MCM also supports uploading custom and private apps in various formats such as MSI packages and PPKG packages.

App Configuration

  • App Deployment Policy: Administrators can configure application settings and enforce app policies. This includes specifying application preferences or policies to ensure consistent behavior across all managed devices.
  • Custom Configurations: Specific configurations for apps, such as email or VPN settings, can be remotely configured through custom policies created through templates.

App Updates

BigFix MCM facilitates Admins to manage software updates for applications, ensuring that devices are running the latest and most secure versions.

App Removal

Administrators can remotely uninstall apps from devices as required. This helps in ensuring compliance, removing unauthorized apps, or addressing security concerns.

BigFix Agent for Windows and macOS

You can prestage BigFix agent on the MDM server to distribute them to enrolled macOS and Windows devices.

To learn how to prestage BigFix agent, see Prestage macOS BigFix installer and Prestage Windows BigFix Installer.

App Catalog

App Catalog is a centralized interface in BigFix WebUI that allows administrators to browse, select, and install applications on the enrolled devices. It allows you to access and install the approved applications.

App distribution work flow

From BigFix WebUI, you can configure application permissions through Appstore App Policy. You can set app permissions applicable globally for all the apps in the policy or you can set individual app permissions as well. To do that:
  1. Add the apps to the App Catalog.
  2. Configure App configuration as applicable.
  3. Create an Appstore App Policy with preferred application permissions and settings.
  4. Add the created app policy to a policy group.
  5. Deploy the policy group to MDM server, onto selected devices, or to a predefined group of devices.
