Installing WebSphere Commerce

Installing WebSphere Commerce using the custom installation
A custom installation allows you to select various components to install on one machine at a time. To install different components on different machines, perform a WebSphere Commerce custom installation on each of the machines in your configuration. A custom installation does not create your WebSphere Commerce instance automatically. You must create the instance after installing WebSphere Commerce and its software stack.

Preparing for a custom installation
A custom installation will proceed more smoothly if you have prepared for it by determining your site topology, software stack, and have performed the necessary system preparation.

WebSphere Commerce installs DB2 Database by default. If you want, you can use an existing installation of DB2, or you can use an Oracle database.
Using Oracle database
If you are performing a custom installation of WebSphere Commerce, you can use an existing Oracle database installation.
Using Oracle RAC with WebSphere Commerce
WebSphere Commerce now supports using Oracle RAC as the WebSphere Commerce database. Oracle RAC enables you to scale your database tier horizontally by using a number of computers, LPARs, or blade servers to distribute your query processing across multiple nodes.
Using Oracle RAC database
Oracle RAC provides database tier workload balancing and failover features. With changes in the configuration of WebSphere Commerce and WebSphere Application Server, the WebSphere Commerce application can take the advantages of Oracle RAC workload balancing and failover functions.

Using Oracle RAC database

Oracle RAC provides database tier workload balancing and failover features. With changes in the configuration of WebSphere Commerce and WebSphere Application Server, the WebSphere Commerce application can take the advantages of Oracle RAC workload balancing and failover functions.

WebSphere Commerce runtime uses JDBC data source connection pooling to connect to Oracle RAC database. You can use WebSphere Application Server pooling, which is very similar as the WebSphere Commerce data source setup on single Oracle instance. The only difference is the data source URL.
