Troubleshooting: Error encountered when applying the fix pack with the Configuration Manager server or Help server running

While installing a WebSphere Commerce fix pack, certain files are not updated and the installation fails.


You encounter the following error message while installing the fix pack, a WebSphere Commerce process is running:
Update installation unsuccessful: The file file_name could not be updated.
Ensure the current user account has write permission for this file and all
files in the product installation location.
  • If the file_name refers to the Utilities.jar file, your Configuration Manager server is running.
  • If the file_name refers to the WCHelpService.exe, your WebSphere Commerce Help server is started.


If you receive one or both messages, complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure the following servers are stopped:
  2. Uninstall the fix pack from the system.
  3. Reapply the fix pack.
