Install HCL VersionVault clients and servers

The method that is used to install HCL VersionVault depends on the target platform and on your installation strategy.

Important: If you are migrating to HCL VersionVault from IBM Rational ClearCase, see the migration guide provided with the download of the HCL VersionVault product before you try to install the product. You must uninstall the ClearCase product before installing HCL VersionVault. The products cannot be installed on the same system. Additionally, VersionVault WAN server cannot share a load balancer across brands.
Before you install VersionVault client and servers, make sure that you are prepared:

User privilege requirements for installing the product There are different requirements for different operating systems. Be sure that your user ID meets the requirements of the operating system where you are installing the product.
For Linux or the UNIX systems: Set the umask so users who do not have root permission can use the product. Complete this step before you install your product. Client

On Linux or the UNIX systems, set the umask variable to 0022 before you install the product. This setting enables the product for users other than root. To set this variable, log in as root user, start a terminal session, and type umask 0022.
For Linux systems: Increase the number of file handles before you install or upgrade HCL VersionVault Client

Increasing the number of file handles on Linux workstations On most Linux computers, the default file handle setting can be too low for obtaining best results with HCL products. Check the setting and adjust it if required.
CAUTION: Setting limits too high can affect system-wide performance.
Use the IBM Packaging Utility if you want to install multiple HCL products in the same repository IBM Packaging Utility You can use the Packaging Utility to complete the following tasks:
  • Generate a new repository for packages
  • Copy packages to a new repository
  • Delete packages that are no longer needed
For Windows systems: Determine a path for package groups and shared resources that allows users who do not have Administrator privileges to use the product Client

User privilege requirements for installing the product To enable users without Administrator authority to work with the product, do not use the C:\Program Files directory path for package groups or shared resources.
