Determining the kind of promotion type your store requires

Compare your promotion type requirements against the default promotion types supplied with the Promotions tool. Determine whether you need a customized promotion type, and if so, whether you can reuse elements of the default promotions to simplify your customization. This can save a lot of time compared with implementing something entirely new.

Before you begin

Review the following topics to ensure that you understand the default promotion types supplied with Management Center:
  • For a list of the default promotion types supplied with Management Center, see Promotions.
  • For a table that summarizes the features of the default promotion types supplied with Management Center, see Promotion type feature matrix.

About this task

HCL Commerce provides a set of default promotion types that include purchase conditions that apply to catalog entries, categories, or the entire order. The rewards target individual catalog entries, the entire order, or the related shipping charges.

Procedure

  1. Review the list of default promotion types supplied with the Promotions tool.
  2. To understand the properties for a specific promotion type, examine the promotion type in the Promotions tool user interface:
    1. Open the Promotions tool..
    2. From the toolbar, click New.
    3. Use the Promotion Type Selector window to review the available promotion types.
    4. Double-click the promotion type you want to review; then examine its properties.
  3. If you find a promotion type that is similar to the one you want to create, identify the differences.

Example

You want to create a new promotion type for your store so that business users can create the following promotion:

Customers who purchase two dining chairs (FULO-01) qualify to purchase a dining table (FULO-02) at the reduced price of $200.

The Promotions tool has a similar default promotion type called Buy catalog entry X, get a percentage off catalog entry Y that supports most of the promotion properties you need. The key difference is that your custom promotion type requires a different adjustment: instead of a percentage discount, your promotion type must support a reduced fixed price. Because this default promotion type is similar to your custom promotion type, you can reuse most of the elements and customize only the promotion adjustment.
