Placing a SIP call without preregistering

If enabled by the IBM® Sametime® administrator, Connect and Embedded users can make audio and video calls to a third-party SIP server without preregistering with that server.

About this task

Users who have preregistered with a third-party SIP server can make calls using the Call and Video Call options in the client interface. Users who did not preregister must complete the following steps to register with the third-party SIP server prior to placing the call.

Procedure

  1. Open the SIP Phone page in the Sametime Preferences dialog box.
  2. In the Domain field, type the name of the Internet domain associated with your user ID; for example, renovations.com.

The SIP PBX uses the domain to identify your user account; for example, to determine which calling features to enable. When you make a SIP call, the third-party SIP server receives your domain information and displays it to the person you are calling.

  3. In the Display Name field, type the name that you want displayed to the person you are calling.
  4. Click Register.
  5. Right-click on a name in your Contacts list, and select Call or Video Call.

You can also make SIP calls from the quick search field, the call history, and the Sametime phone book.
