Controlling the ODS version of client-based databases

There are several ways to control the on-disk structure (ODS) versions of client-based databases.

Note: As of Notes 12.0.2, upgrading a Notes client automatically upgrades databases in the data directory to the latest ODS format, superceding any client notes.ini settings used to control ODS format. Although not recommended, you can use the client notes.ini setting NSF_AlwaysUpdateODS=0 before starting an upgraded client to disable the automatic ODS upgrade. The settings described in the following table only apply if you use the NSF_AlwaysUpdateODS=0 setting.

Before you begin

Learn about ODS, including the concept of default ODS version versus ODS version introduced with a specific Notes/Domino release. For more information, see Domino on-disk structure (ODS).

About this task

Procedure

Refer to the following table.
Table 1. Controlling the ODS version of client-based databases
Goal Steps More information
Use the default ODS version for the Notes client release. Use the notes.ini setting NSF_UpdateODS=1 on the client. When this setting is used, after startup, the Notes client checks for databases that are lower than the default ODS version for the Notes release and does copy-style compacting to upgrade them to the default version.

This is the equivalent of enabling the following setting in a Desktop Settings policy, located on the Mail tab, Client Settings section: Enable upgrade of all local NSFs to latest ODS version.

Use an ODS version introduced with a specific Notes/Domino release.

Use the notes.ini setting Create_R<v>_Databases=1 where <v> is the Notes/Domino version in which the desired ODS version was introduced.

For example, to use ODS 55 on new or copy-style compacted databases, specify:

Create_R12_Databases=1

Revert a database ODS one version back. From a command prompt, run the following command from the Notes program directory:
ncompact <database> -R
For example, running the following command on sales.nsf which is at ODS 55 reverts it to ODS 53:
ncompact sales.nsf -R
