Finding and replacing cell contents

You can search the selected range, current sheet, or all sheets in a spreadsheet for the text or numbers.

About this task

When performing the following procedures, you can narrow or broaden your search by selecting one or more of these options:

  • Match case – Cell contents are a match only if they have the same case as the Find entry.
  • Entire cell – Cell contents are a match only in cells that include no other content besides the Find entry.
  • Search all sheets – All sheets in the current spreadsheet are included in the search.

You can also search within a specific range by selecting the cells before performing the Find and Replace.

Note: Find and Replace does not currently support the use of regular expressions.

Procedure

  • To find text or numbers:
    1. In a spreadsheet, click Edit > Find and Replace.
    2. Enter the characters you want to find in the Find field.
    3. To narrow or broaden your search, select any of the options described earlier.
    4. Click Find. To go to the next occurrence, click Find again, and so on.
    5. When you are finished, click OK.
  • To find and replace text or numbers:
    1. In a spreadsheet, click Edit > Find and Replace.
    2. Enter the characters that you want to find in the Find field.
    3. In the Replace field, enter the characters with which you want to replace the found entries.
    4. To narrow or broaden your search, select any of the options described earlier.
    5. Do one of the following:
      • To evaluate whether to replace each occurrence, in the Replace field enter the characters with which you want to replace the found entries. Click Find, and if you want to replace this occurrence, click Replace. Click Find again to go to the next occurrence, and so on.
      • To replace all occurrences of the entry, click Replace All.
    6. When you are finished, click OK.
