Migrating Cognos Business Intelligence

Use a new content store to migrate Cognos® Business Intelligence for Connections from 4.5 or 5.0 to 5.5.

About this task

Use a new Cognos content store database for 5.5.

Do not use an existing Cognos content store database; the procedure is more complex and does not add any benefits.

Procedure

  1. Install the new Cognos Business intelligence server with Connections Cognos installation wizard.
Note: Use the Connections 4.5 or 5.0 Cognos content store database information when preparing the cognos-setup.properties file for the Cognos Business Intelligence components installation. If an old Cognos node already exists on the Connections 5.5 Deployment Manager before you federate the newly installed Cognos server to it, remove the old Cognos node first, uninstall the Cognos application if it exists in the application list, and then federate the newly installed Cognos server to the Deployment Manager.
  2. Configure Cognos BI as described in Configuring Cognos Business Intelligence .
  3. Run build-all.bat|sh under Cognos_transformer_install_path/metricsmodel to rebuild the power cube on the newly installed Cognos Transformer server.
Note: All the history data in Metrics database needs to be restored from the database backup file before you run the build-all.bat|sh script. To do this, you can restore all history data to Connections 4.5 or 5.0 Metrics database, then use the database migration tool to migrate the data to Connections 5.5 Metrics database as described in step 4.
  4. Import the customized reports and community reports to the Connections 5.5 Cognos BI server.
    1. Copy the MigrationPkg50.zip you created when you backed up the reports to the cognos_biserver_install_path/deployment folder on the new Connections 5.5 BI server.
    2. Open a browser and log into the new Connections 5.5 Cognos dashboard page as Cognos administrator.
    3. On Cognos dashboard page, click Launch and then select IBM Cognos Administration.
    4. Select the Configuration tab then Content Administration.
    5. On the Administration page, click New Import on the tool bar to create an 'Import' object.
    6. Select MigrationPkg50 for Deployment archive in the new opened page and then click Next.
    7. Use default name and then click Next.
    8. Select the CustomizeReportsBackup in the Public folders content section, keep the default options for other items, and then click Next.
    9. Keep the default options for this page and then click Next to go to the Review the summary page.
    10. Click Next to go to the Select an action page.
    11. Select Save and run once, then click Finish.
    12. Select Now, keep the other options on this page unchanged and then click Run.
    13. If you receive a message that confirms you to run the import, select the View the details of this import after closing this dialog option and then click OK to start the import.
    14. In the View run history details page, you can click the Refresh link to refresh the status of the import after you wait for a while. When the import completes, the status changes to Succeeded.
  5. Restore and re-configure customized reports on the Connections 5.5 BI server. If no customization was made, you can skip this step:
    1. Open a browser and log into the new Connections 5.5 Cognos dashboard page as Cognos administrator.
    2. Copy all customized reports and folders from the Public Folders > IBMConnectionsMetrics > CustomizeReportsBackup folder to Public Folders > IBMConnectionsMetrics > Metrics > customReports.
Note: For Connections 5.5, put all customized reports and folders for global Metrics in IBMConnectionsMetrics > Metrics > customReports. If this is not the location that you used in 4.5 or 5.0, additional steps are needed to reconfigure the global Metrics customized report link in the reports-config.xml file. Refer to Adding custom reports to the Metrics reports list for details.
    3. Copy customized reports for Community Metrics from Public Folders > IBMConnectionsMetrics > CustomizeReportsBackup folder to Public Folders > IBMConnectionsMetrics > Metrics > community > customizedTheme to make them available for Community Metrics.
    4. Confirm that the customized reports for both global and community can work well in the Metrics interface.
    5. Delete Public Folders > IBMConnectionsMetrics > CustomizeReportsBackup.
