Creating rule-based sales categories

You can create a rule-based sales category within a sales catalog. By using rule-based sales categories, you can build a sales catalog that is quick and easy to populate with catalog entries and to update to include new catalog entries. For more information about rule-based sales categories, see Rule-based sales categories.

About this task

You can create a rule-based sales category by using the following steps or by creating a copy of an existing rule-based sales category and editing the copy.

Procedure

  1. Open the Catalogs tool.
  2. Select your store from the Select Store list
  3. From the explorer filter, select Sales Catalog Categories.
  4. Create a rule-based sales category by using one of these methods:
    • To create a category in a sales catalog:
      1. On the explorer view, right-click a sales catalog or sales category. Click New Rule-Based Sales Category. The New Rule-Based Sales Category view displays. The new category is created as a subcategory of the selected sales catalog or sales category.
Note: You cannot right-click an existing rule-based sales category to create a sales category or rule-based sales category within it. A rule-based sales category cannot be a parent category.
    • To copy an existing rule-based sales category, go to the category in the explorer view:
      1. On the explorer view or list view, right-click the category that you want to copy. Click Copy.
      2. On the list view, right-click anywhere. Click Paste > Copy.

The properties view for the new rule-based sales category displays. The properties and the rule for the original rule-based sales category is copied, including any search filters or catalog entries that are specified to include in the category.

    Property Description
Display to customers Select this check box to indicate that customers can view this category in the storefront. You can have a different setting for this category for each language that your store supports. For instance, you can display the category for customers that are browsing your store in French, but not when customers are browsing your store in English.
Thumbnail All image files must be placed in the store's defined image directory. Determining the correct image directory and whether you need an absolute or relative path depends on your store's configuration. For example, the HCL Commerce starter store images use a relative path that points to the default installation directory under the store name. Use of a relative path is most common. Use of an absolute path is dependent on your initial configuration. Ask a store developer with Site Administrator authority for the correct image directory if you are unsure. This field can be edited in multiple languages. The forward slash (/) must be used as the directory separator.
Full image Type in the relative path to the full image. The forward slash (/) must be used as the directory separator.

  10. After creating the Rule Based Sales Category, reload to trigger the delta indexing.
Note: You can skip the indexing by setting the DisableIndexBuildFromCMC flag to true. For the Catalog component, a configurable option DisableIndexBuildFromCMC is added to the wc-component.xml file. If you set this option to true, re-indexing is disabled from the Management Center for the following cases:
    • Store preview
    • Show facets
    • Task group commit and approval
    • Reload rule based sales category
