Personalization field types in personalization rules

Personalization rules compare recipient-specific values for a personalization field to a value specified in the rule. The type of data that you specify in the rule must match the type of data provided by the personalization field. Personalization fields provide either numeric or text data. The type of data provided by the field is part of the personalization field definition contained in the Output List Table (OLT) referenced by the mailing.

For example, if you specify a personalization field for <-PostalCode-> in the rule, and Postal Code is defined as a numeric personalization field in the OLT, you must specify a number as the comparison value. If you specify a text value, the rule will fail validation.

The Rule editor considers the personalization field type when you specify a comparison operator. The data type of the personalization field and the comparison value must be appropriate for the type of comparison operator you select. For example, if you select the operator greater than (>), you must specify a numerical value. If you enter a text value, or surround a number with quotation marks, the rule will fail validation.

Note: To ensure that the system accurately evaluates a personalization rule, reference the OLT that defines the personalization field on which the rule is based and the email communication that contains rule to the same mailing. Reference the OLT and the communication to the mailing before you attempt to preview the results of the personalization rule.
