Sending S/MIME Encrypted messages on an iOS device

In order to send S/MIME encrypted messages, the Default Encryption Type must be set to S/MIME.

To do so, first add an S/MIME credential in Settings > Account > S/MIME Certificates. In order to encrypt a message, Verse iOS must have the S/MIME certificates for all the recipients of the message. S/MIME certificates are collected automatically as S/MIME signed messages are received from each person. They can also be manually added to HCL Verse iOS. For more information see Manage S/MIME credentials and certificates on HCL Verse iOS

Once the Default Encryption Type is set to S/MIME, choosing the Encrypt (S/MIME) option during message composition will encrypt the outgoing message.

How do I send an S/MIME encrypted message?

  1. Click on the New message icon on HCL Verse iOS.
  2. On the Mail Compose screen, enter the recipients information, subject and body of the email the same way you would compose a standard mail message.
  3. Click on the Mail Options icon to launch the Mail Options dialog.
  4. Toggle the Encrypt (S/SMIME) switch to sign the message.
  5. Click "Done" to go back to the Mail Compose screen.
  6. Click "Send" to send the email as S/MIME signed.
Note: If S/MIME certificates are missing from one or more recipients, when you click "Send", a dialog appears with the list of recipients who do not have certificates. Either disable encryption or remove those recipients to send the message. Alternatively, once S/MIME signed messages are received from those recipients, Verse iOS collects the required certificates.
