Sending S/MIME Encrypted messages on an Android device

In order to send S/MIME encrypted messages, the Default Encryption Type must be set to S/MIME.

To do so, first add an S/MIME credential in Settings. In order to encrypt a message, Verse Android must have S/MIME certificates for all the recipients of the message. S/MIME certificates are collected automatically as S/MIME signed messages are received from each person. They can also be manually added via Settings > Account > Collected S/MIME Certificates and clicking Add Certificate.

Once the Default Encryption Type is set to S/MIME, choosing the Encrypt (S/MIME) option during message composition will encrypt the outgoing message. If S/MIME certificates are missing from one or more recipients, when Send is pressed, a dialog will be shown with the list of recipients who do not have certificates. Either disable encryption or remove those recipients to send the message. Alternatively, once S/MIME signed messages are received from those recipients, Verse Android will collect the required certificates.

Note: See Configuring Message Encryption on an Android Device for instructions on configuring S/MIME preferences.
