IBM® Sametime® consists of a variety of servers and clients, and can be deployed to suit many different environments. The deployment instructions are organized by feature set, beginning with the minimum components that are necessary to support instant messaging, and then expanding the deployment to include features such as audio and video support, and conferencing.

SIP trunking allows IBM® Sametime® users to make SIP-based phone calls from their installed Sametime clients.
Designing the dial plan for SIP trunking
Before you begin configuring SIP trunking, you should figure out how calls from IBM® Sametime® will connect to the third-party SIP endpoint by working out a dial plan. A dial plan is the set of dial strings (phone numbers), routes (connections), and rules (conditions) that enable one user to place a telephone call to another user. Determining the dial plan first provides information needed during later configuration steps.

About this task

The IBM® Sametime® Software Development Kit includes documentation and a sample application for a Telephone Number Service extension that allows you to control the retrieval and formatting of telephone numbers used to make telephone calls from the Sametime client. This extension is useful when phone numbers retrieved from the corporate directory, or entered by users, might require modification to meet dialing plan requirements; for example during the telephony integration of a deployment that depends on LDAP entries other than the default telephoneNumber attribute.
