Updating WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment

Sametime® V9.0.1 servers were installed on IBM® WebSphere® Application Server Network Deployment V8.5.5.8. Before you can update Sametime to Feature Pack 1, you must update WebSphere to V8.5.5.11 or later.

Before you begin

Upgrade Installation Manager to V1.8.4.1 or later as explained in Upgrading Installation Manager.

About this task

For more information on updating WebSphere with fixes, see the tech note for Readme for IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.11.

Important: Sametime 9.0.1 FP1 requires Java 6; you should already have Java 6 installed with Sametime 9.0.1. If you are prompted to update to Java version 8 during the WebSphere update, do not allow it. Updating to Java 8 will cause Sametime server installations to fail.

Procedure

  1. On the computer where you will update Sametime, log on as root (Linux™) or as the system administrator (Windows™).
  2. Open a browser and navigate to WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 Fix Pack 11, and download the appropriate "Full profile" fix pack for your operating system.
  3. Extract the fix pack to a temporary location on the server.
  4. Stop all WebSphere Application Server processes on the server.
  5. Start Installation Manager.
    • Linux: Open a command window and change to the location where you installed Installation Manager, and then start Installation Manager by running the following command: ./IBMIM. The default installation location is /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse.
    • Windows: Click Start > All Programs > Installation Manager > Installation Manager.
  6. Add the repository for the WebSphere Application Server interim fix.
Note: Sametime 9.0.1 requires you to update WebSphere Application Server 8.5.5 to fix level 8.5.5.11. Use the fix pack that you downloaded and extracted.
Each fix contains its own repository.config file. You do not have to extract the .zip file for each fix and browse to the repository.config file; pointing to the .zip file is sufficient.
    1. Add the repository for each fix by completing the following steps:
Note: Locate and select the repository.config file for each fix that you are applying.
      1. On the Repositories page, click Add Repository.
      2. On the Add Repository page, click Browse.
      3. On the Select Repository page, browse to the location where you stored the extracted files for WebSphere Network Deployment, and locate the repository.config file in the top-level directory.
      4. Click the repository.config file to select it, and then click Apply.
    2. Click OK.
  7. Click Update.
  8. Select IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment 8.5.5 as the package group to be updated, and then click Next.
  9. Select 8.5.5.11 Fix Pack as the fix to install, and then click Next.
  10. Accept the terms in the license agreements, and then click Next.
  11. Review the summary information, and then click Update.
  12. Click Finish to complete the update.
  13. Click File > Exit to close Installation Manager.
