SafeLinx Clients can establish virtual private network (VPN) connections with mobile access services across various wireless and wireline network. SafeLinx Clients use these optimized, secure IP tunnels to communicate with resources on the internal network.

This section describes the use of the SafeLinx Client on Windows.
Starting a connection
When you create a connection, you can start it or create a shortcut to it.
Connecting on Windows™ to the SafeLinx Server
After you establish and start network connections, you can connect your device to the SafeLinx Server.

SafeLinx Clients
SafeLinx Clients can establish virtual private network (VPN) connections with mobile access services across various wireless and wireline network. SafeLinx Clients use these optimized, secure IP tunnels to communicate with resources on the internal network.

        If you know the name of the connection you want to start, you can also establish a connection to the SafeLinx Server from the command line.
        Starting a connection when Windows™ starts
        You can configure a specific connection to start automatically after Windows starts. A connection that is configured to start when Windows starts runs as a service and the connection is listed in the Service Control Manager.
        Using a Windows™ user ID and password to log on to the SafeLinx Server
        Rather than using a separate SafeLinx Client logon, you can use your Windows user ID and password credentials to log on to the SafeLinx Server. To use integrated logon, you must install the custom program component that supports it. This custom program component is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
        Changing the initial expired password
        The first password that you receive for connecting to the SafeLinx Server is a temporary password. When you start a connection and log on for the first time, the Change Password window displays to prompt you to change your password.
    - Checking that applications are running before connecting
      You can configure the SafeLinx Client to check that specific programs are running, such as antivirus or personal firewall software, before allowing the connection to start.
    - Automatically starting applications after connecting
      The SafeLinx Client can be configured to start applications automatically after a connection is established. The number of applications which you can autostart is restricted to 16. In addition to specifying the application name, you can also configure any parameters with which you want the application started.
    - Importing and exporting configuration files
      You can export the configuration file that controls how a SafeLinx Client connects to the network and then import the file to other clients to reuse those settings.
    - Viewing connection status on Windows™ operating systems
      The Status window displays information about your connection to the SafeLinx Server:
    - Modifying connection properties
      After you create a connection, you can modify the connection configuration. From the Connections window, right-click the icon that represents the connection, and select Properties.
    - Using cross network roaming
      Using seamless cross-network roaming, the SafeLinx Client connection and applications persist when switching networks in a multi-network (both IP and non-IP) environment. Persistence allows switching physical networks, while preserving both the connection and application session.
    - Limitations of cross-network roaming
      A third-party developer can extend the SafeLinx Client for access to network connectivity events for a specific radio modem. This extended connectivity occurs by developing a custom dynamic link library (DLL) designed for that modem.
    - Sharing the SafeLinx Client connection on Windows™
      You can share the SafeLinx Client connection through Internet Connection Sharing so you can connect multiple local area network computers to your intranet. You can use just one computer with a SafeLinx Client connection.
    - Setting up a trace
      You can set up a trace to record diagnostic information for the SafeLinx Client. For example, if the modem does not initialize, set up a trace to capture every message sent during the initialization process. Store these messages in the trace file. HCL service personnel might request a trace file from you to help diagnose a problem.
    - Applying maintenance on Windows™ operating systems
      Links to code fixes, for entitled customers, are available from the HCL SafeLinx product support website.
    - Removing the SafeLinx Client from Windows
      The process varies slightly depending upon which version of Windows you are running.
  - Configuring clients with a configuration file
    The artour.ini file contains configuration information about your client and each connection you define. This file is modified when you create connections or modify their properties. It controls which fields and buttons are presented on the Connect window for each connection.

Connecting on Windows™ to the SafeLinx Server

After you establish and start network connections, you can connect your device to the SafeLinx Server.

Procedure

On the Mobility Connections window, double-click or double-tap the icon for the connection you want to start. The Connect window is displayed. Enter:
- Org Unit
- User ID
- Password
Depending on how your SafeLinx Client is configured, a field can be absent or not required.
Check Save Password if you want to save your password. When you save a password, you are not required to enter a password before connecting to the SafeLinx Server with that user ID. Saving a password also enables users who do not know the password to make a connection.
For dial connections, click or tap Change to change the settings of your dial connection. For example, you move in and out of areas where it is not always necessary to dial an area code to connect. You can use the Change Settings window to add or remove the area code before starting a connection.
After the user completes the fields, click or tap Connect to connect to the SafeLinx Server. Click Cancel if you do not want to connect.
You can configure the user ID and SafeLinx Server to which you are connecting to run RADIUS authentication. If the SafeLinx Server is configured to challenge the user for the RADIUS logon info, another Connect window displays after the connection to the SafeLinx Server is established. Enter the user ID and password to connect with the RADIUS server in the second Connect window.
