Creating a connection

After downloading and installing the SafeLinx Client, network connections can be defined and added.

Before you begin

Before you define a connection, you must have the following information:
  • Is a password required?
  • If this connection fails, is there a backup connection to try?
  • What is the IP address or host name of the SafeLinx Server?
  • If you want to select interfaces to use, make sure that all network adapters and modems are installed.
  • Depending on the network you select, you might be asked specific information to set up the connection for the specific network. For example, if you have a dial connection, what are the country code, area code, and telephone number of the SafeLinx Server? For more detail about the fields in the Network Setup wizard, see the online help.
  • If your computer connects to the internet through a modem, during the process of setting up a new connection you will need to provide details about the modem configuration. Refer to the information you obtained from your service provider when you first activated the modem.

After you install the SafeLinx Client, click Start > Programs > SafeLinx Client to start it. If you specified a folder name while installing the client, SafeLinx Client is replaced by that name.

When you define network connections, they are added to the Connections folder. If the Connections folder does not display, your configuration is not set up to define network connections.

Procedure

  • To create a connection:
    1. Click or tap Start > Programs > SafeLinx Client > Connections.
    2. In the Mobility Connections window, icons exist for previously defined connections. To define a new connection, double-click or tap Create Connection. The Create Connection wizard guides you through the process of defining a new connection.
  • For IP connections, the default behavior of the SafeLinx Client is to use the fastest available network connection to communicate with the SafeLinx Server. Wireless WAN network connections are not automatically started by the SafeLinx Client. These connections must be established by the user before the Mobility Client can use them. The properties of such a connection show one network interface named Default Local IP.
  • Alternatively, users can select the Advanced button when defining the connection to explicitly select the set of network connections they want to use. Users can also determine the priority of each one. WiFi and Ethernet connections must be active to be listed. The properties of an advanced connection list an interface for each network connection chosen when the connection was defined. Wireless WAN connections are automatically started by the SafeLinx Client for advanced connections.
