Disabling Terminal Services before you install, upgrade, or modify IBM products

On Windows systems, disable Terminal Services before update, roll back, modify, or uninstall operations.

About this task

When Terminal Services are enabled on Microsoft Windows systems, multiple users can connect to the same system in different sessions. In this scenario, other users can continue using the product while another user is attempting to update, modify, roll back, or uninstall the product. These operations can fail if IBM Installation Manager processes are unable to modify files that are locked because they are being used in another session.

To avoid issues that are caused by locked files, disable Remote Desktop. Then, log out of all other Windows sessions before you attempt to complete the product update, modify, roll back, or uninstall operation. When Remote Desktop is disabled, you cannot reconnect to the server with Remote Desktop. If your Windows session is disconnected, you must either restart the server or log on directly through the console. If necessary, click Send Message in the Windows Task Manager to communicate with an Active session before you log off.

Procedure

Disable Windows Terminal Services before update, roll back, modify, or uninstall operations.
  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. To disable Remote Desktop, run this command: change logon /disable.
  3. To start the Windows Task Manager, run this command: taskmgr.exe.
  4. In Windows Task Manager, click the Users tab to view Active sessions on the current system.
  5. Log off all Active sessions except the session you are using.
  6. After you log off all sessions, use Installation Manager to complete the update, roll back, modify, or uninstall operation.

Results

Verify that Remote Desktop is enabled so that other users can connect to the system.
  • If the system was rebooted after the Installation Manager operation completed, Remote Desktop Connects are restarted.
  • If the system did not restart, run this command to enable Remote Desktop Connections: change logon /enable.
