Required information for sharing content

When you configure a social sharing link, you must provide information that social networks use as metadata to describe and display the shared content. The format requirements for each network determine how it creates a link to your content. The information that you provide can influence how the content link appears to members of the social network.

When an email recipient clicks a social sharing link, the system includes metadata with the share request that it sends to the social network.

Except for Type, you must provide all of the information that is described in the table when you add social sharing links to your marketing message.

Social link information

Metadata Description

Title

Appears as the heading in social network listings. By default, the system uses the email subject line as the value for Title, but you can change it. You can create a title that is more descriptive or attracts attention better than an email subject line. Be as concise as possible. Some social networks limit the number of allowed characters.

Description

Short summary that you want to appear on the social network. Be concise. Some networks impose character limitations that restrict the length of the description. If you do not provide a description, some social networks scan the beginning of the email to create a description.

Thumbnail

A small image that appears next to the shared content listing in some social networks. You can specify a custom image to highlight the shared content as it appears on a social network. Choose an image from the Content Library or enter a URL to an image on a web server.

Type (optional)

Select or enter information that describes the type of content in the email that is being shared. The Share widget provides several default categories, but you can enter a different type. Some social networks use the type information to manage shared content.

Use short link

The link to the web page version of the email. When you publish an email that contains a social sharing link, the system creates a hosted landing page that duplicates the email. The duplicate page does not include the social share links. The link that is shared on social networks points to the duplicate landing page.

When you receive short links from Unica , you can select the short link domain here.

To stay within character limitations that are imposed by some social networks, the system shortens the link that it provides to social networks. The shortened links are called short links. The system constructs a short link that is based on a unique short link domain. To use short links, you must have a short link domain that is configured for your hosted messaging account. Short link domains are available only upon request from Unica .

When the email recipient clicks a social sharing link, the system tracks the share request as a link click. The system also records when other individuals click the content link that appears on social networks. The link click data is added to the Deliver system tables and attributed to the original email recipient.
