The Script Application
The Script Application enables script developers to create portlets for HCL Digital Experience with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
Build applications with the Script Application
After the cumulative fix that includes the Script Application is installed, you can create and edit applications with the Script Application Editor, import items to existing applications, or upload content from the command line.

In CF201, some improvements are made to the Script Applications. You can now upload minified content, use a new configuration task to set the required WCM properties for script applications such as React or Angular, and make use of the new Deferred with React theme profile.

  - Installing
    HCL Digital Experience provides flexible deployment options that range from proof-of-concept where you can examine and test functionality to a highly available and scalable production environment. Review the planning information to learn more about hardware and software requirements, high availability, scalability, supported topologies, and much more. Select your operating system and then select the installation pattern that most reflects your business needs.
  - Configuring
    Run the following tasks after you install and deploy HCL Digital Experience. They address tasks that are typically run one time and have a global effect. Some configuration changes are made more frequently or do not have a global effect. These tasks are addressed in the Administering section.
  - Backup and restore
    Backup and recovery of data files and databases is an essential operation for any business system, particularly for data and applications that run in production environments. Create and follow a plan for backing up and recovering data on all tiers of your HCL Digital Experience deployment. IBM Installation Manager must also be included in backup and recovery planning. If you back up the HCL Portal file structure and then install a fix pack, your HCL Digital Experience and IBM Installation Manager become out of sync after you restore the HCL Portal file system. This condition is not recoverable.
  - Migrating
    Successful migration requires significant planning and preparation, understanding the tools that are involved, and careful execution of the appropriate steps in the order provided.
  - Integrating
    Integrate HCL Digital Experience with software such as HCL Sametime to enable your users to collaborate more easily. You can also use the unified task list portlet to integrate HCL with your backend business process software, such as IBM Process Server.
  - Administering
    Use the administration tools that are provided with the portal to do various day-to-day administration tasks. There are two methods for editing portal setup: using the administration portlets or the XML configuration interface. The administration portlets are a convenient way to make real-time updates to the portal's configuration. While the XML configuration interface is suited to more advanced administration, including batch processing of updates.

    Security tasks include setting up property extension databases and custom user repositories, configuring and activating SSL, and configuring authentication. In addition, tasks such as activating Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) and NIST SP800-131a security modules and configuring external security managers such as Security Access Manager might be required to secure your portal environment.

    Setting up a website includes, creating pages, adding navigation, setting up search, and adding content to the site. Themes are used to customize the portal's look-and-feel. Out-of-the-box templates and the site wizard can help you set up your portal site faster. You can add wikis and blogs to your site and let users tag and rate content on your site.

    During portal solution development, the solution is initially developed, tested, and refined on one server or a limited number of servers. The solution is deployed later on live systems, referred to as the production environment. The process of moving the solution from the development environment to the production environment is called staging.

    - Changing to a developer mode environment
      Install HCL Digital Experience and then immediately change to a developer mode environment. Use this environment when you develop applications, themes, portals, and portlets. Startup performance is improved within a developer mode environment.

      Generating Portal URLs correctly is one of the most important tasks in programming an HCL Portal based application. There are several programming tools and techniques available for generating HCL Portal URLs in custom code.     - Model SPI overview
      Models provide information that is needed by HCL Digital Experience to perform tasks such as content aggregation or building navigation to browse the aggregated content. The information that is aggregated is represented through models that can be accessed programmatically by using the Model SPI (read-only). The information of a model is usually persistent (stored in a database) but can also be transient (computed and stored only in memory). Models can be represented by using a tree structure (nodes have a parent-child relationship), a list structure, or a selection structure (a selected element in a tree structure).

      You can use the Controller SPI for portal administration. It allows you to modify portal resources. It enhances the read-only portal Model SPI by adding writable aspects.

      The Portal User Management Architecture (PUMA) System programming interface (SPI) provides interfaces for accessing the profiles of a portal User or Group.

        Script Application Editor
        You can take any existing web page, pick out individual parts, and enter them into corresponding tabs in the Script Application Editor. The Preview window displays the results as you edit.

        Add tokens to generate unique namespace IDs when applications are pushed or imported to a Script Application
        Associating JavaScript variable names and HTML IDs with a unique portlet namespace prevents applications from colliding with each other and uniquely identifies HTML element ID values and JavaScript variables. To use a unique portlet namespace, you can prefix or suffix any imported JavaScript, HTML, CSS, or JSON variable or ID with the token __SPNS__. The Script Application replaces the __SPNS__ token with the Web Content Manager ScriptPortletNamespace plug-in markup when a script application is pushed or imported from the developer client to the server. The Web Content Manager ScriptPortletNamespace plug-in markup generates the unique namespace for the application when it is rendered.
        Import applications that include links to JavaScript frameworks
        To use a JavaScript framework or library from an application, use portal theme modules to load the shared JavaScript. Do not load them from the application.
        Script Application Editor actions menu overview
        You can insert tags, preferences, and parameters and export a Script Application with the Actions menu in the Script Application Editor.
        Combine local JavaScript files when you import applications
        You can import Script Applications with multiple JavaScript files.
        Adding an existing Script Application from the toolbar
        You can add a Script Application to a page directly from the toolbar when a Script Application is created and added to a site area.
        Updating an existing Script Application instance with the command line push application
        You can use the Script Application push function to update an existing application on a portal page or to update an application in an HCL Web Content Manager site area.
        Generating a URL Map from local application paths to runtime Web Content Manager URLs
        You can generate a JavaScript based URL map from local application file system paths to runtime Web Content Manager Library URL paths to application artifacts, when necessary. This feature is advanced and is disabled by default.

External data means that the data does not need to be stored directly in HCL Web Content Manager. For example, you can use DDC to render social data that you have on your HCL Connections server or on other social platforms in the context of your portal pages. Other possible data sources include news feeds, task lists, product catalog information, to name just a few.

      To determine the current web content context of a portal page or Web Content Viewer portlet, you can use the WCM Page Context Service. This service provides the ID of the currently rendered item of a page or portlet.

Script Application Improvements

In CF201, some improvements are made to the Script Applications. You can now upload minified content, use a new configuration task to set the required WCM properties for script applications such as React or Angular, and make use of the new Deferred with React theme profile.

The following improvements were made for the Script Application on CF201:

The issue with uploading minified content is fixed so you can now use production builds of an SPA
A new configuration task is available to configure WCM properties required to run SPAs like React or Angular in script applications: ConfigEngine.sh|bat enable-wcm-spa-script-app-properties
Out of the box react profile in the 8.5 theme: Deferred with React

Fix for minified content processing

In CF200 and earlier, minified single line content would cause an issue with React and other SPAs due a problem with processing of the files in WCM. For example, in webpack, it was recommended to set collapseWhitespace=false. We have addressed this issue with CF201 and you can now build your script applications with collapseWhitespace=true going forward.

Configuring WCM properties for SPA script apps

When using an Angular, React or another SPA in a script application, it is necessary to turn off the dynamic parameter tag and shortform in DX since they may interfere with some of the syntax used. Instead of having to trigger this manually, a new configuration task was added to configure these for you. Note that a restart of DX Portal is still required for the changes to take effect.

Config task: ConfigEngine.sh|bat enable-wcm-spa-script-app-properties

To disable run: ConfigEngine.sh|bat disable-wcm-spa-script-app-properties

Deferred with React theme profile in 8.5 theme

A new Deferred with React theme profile was added that includes React v16 which can be used on pages contain React script applications.
