Installing WebSphere Commerce Developer

This section describes how to install and configure WebSphere Commerce Developer. WebSphere Commerce Developer is a test environment for developers or system administrators to develop stores and WebSphere Commerce application code.

WebSphere Commerce Developer is the combination of Rational Application Developer and the WebSphere Commerce toolkit. The WebSphere Commerce toolkit provides a test environment, a workspace, and published starter stores in Rational Application Developer. The test environment and workspace are customized for WebSphere Commerce development.

Note: The installation media can contain software that does not match recommended fix pack levels. Ensure that you update software to recommended levels. If you need to install WebSphere Commerce Developer again, you can use a local customized installation package with Rational Application Developer, WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Commerce at the recommended levels. You can use this package to install WebSphere Commerce Developer at the recommended levels without the need to immediately update the software. Using a local customized installation package does not require internet access to download fix packs.

If you are developing assets for more than one target application, you might need to configure multiple WebSphere Commerce workspaces. To obtain multiple WebSphere Commerce workspaces, install the WebSphere Commerce toolkit multiple times.

It is recommended that you install WebSphere Commerce Developer on a separate machine from the WebSphere Commerce production or staging environment.

Migration to WebSphere Commerce Developer from the following versions of WebSphere Commerce Developer is supported: Migration from earlier versions of WebSphere Commerce Developer is not supported.

Coexistence with other versions of WebSphere Commerce Developer is not supported. If you are migrating, install WebSphere Commerce Developer Version 8.0 on a separate machine from your old WebSphere Commerce Developer Version.

Depending on the size of your organization, there are two options available to you for installing IBM WebSphere Commerce Developer. In a large development organization, you might want to create a common central repository so that you can set up and manage multiple identical development environments. If this option is not appropriate for your organization, you can instead install WebSphere Commerce Developer on each individual workstation.
