Contents of the Detailed Bounce report

The Detailed Bounce Report presents statistics for returned email as total counts in various categories for each mailing instance.

The report presents bounce responses in two charts that illustrate the relative number of various types of email bounces received for the selected mailing instances.

The report also contains a table that lists specific results for each bounce type and each mailing instance.

Column Description
List The number of intended recipients. This number equals the number of recipients in the recipient list that is referenced by the mailing
Sent The number of messages that were sent during mailing execution. If this number is less than the total in the List category, the difference is the number of messages that experienced some form of transmission failure and were never sent. For example, the system does not send email with an invalid address.
Invalid Addresses The system did not send the email message because the email address is not formatted correctly or is listed on the global email suppression list.
Mail Bounce Email replies that Deliver can identify as a bounce reply, but cannot positively characterize as either a hard or soft bounce.
Hard Bounce Email replies that Deliver can identify as representing a permanent problem with the receiving mailbox. For example, the destination mailbox does not exist.
Soft Bounce Email messages that cannot be delivered now because of a temporary problem with the receiving mailbox. The message might reach the intended recipient if you send it again. For example, the recipient mailbox is full.
Abuse Complaints Messages that are returned by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) because the recipient reported the message as unwanted email (spam).
Out of Office The intended recipient set an Out of Office reply for the destination mailbox. The message might reach the recipient if you send it later. For example, the message might be delivered successfully after the recipient changes the mailbox status.
Technical Issue The email message encountered a problem with the infrastructure used to transmit and deliver the message. For example, a network interruption or the receiving email servers were not operating. This type of issue is not related to problems with the receiving mailbox, which would be reported as a bounced message.
Challenge/Response Email messages that encounter a challenge/response spam filter. During email delivery, challenge/response filters require human interaction to allow email delivery.
Other Email messages that were returned because of reasons that are not categorized separately in the Detailed Bounce Report.
Unknown Deliver is unable to determine the reason why the message was returned.
