Android limitations and restrictions

This topic describes known Android device restrictions and limitations with IBM Traveler.

For limitations and restrictions that apply to all device clients, refer to General limitations.

Android platform

Problem

Details

Dates are not formatted according to user's format selection.

The Java date formatting API may ignore the Android Date & time settings > Select date format setting. As a result, Android platform applications (such as Calendar) may not respond to changes in this setting. Use the Android Language & keyboard settings > Select language setting to select your language and locale. The selected locale is used within IBM Traveler.

Application icons are incorrect and non-functional. Clicking on one of the incorrect icons displays the error, The Linked program is no longer installed on your phone.

On some devices, upgrading from a previous beta version of the client can cause the application icons to be incorrect and non functional. This is a known issue with these devices. To resolve the issue, uninstall the previous version of the application, then install its most recent version.

The IBM Traveler application appears in the wrong location under Manage Applications.

In the Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications menu, the IBM Traveler application may be sorted under 'C'. This appears to be temporary. Pressing back and returning to Manage Applications restores the proper sort order.

Sony Tablet P closes the Settings menu when selecting sub elements.

On Sony Tablet P devices, selecting sub elements within the Settings menu will force close the dialog. This is due to an error in the device manufacturer's OS implementation, and can only be fixed by the device manufacturer. This limitation will exist until the manufacturer provides a fix for the issue.

Sony Tablet P dual display problems.

While all functions work, due to the special dual screen layout of the Sony Tablet P, the user experience of IBM Traveler may be less than desirable. User experience problems such as this will remain until Sony fixes the screen layout issue.

Install

Problem

Details

Migrating from 8.5.2.x.

Migrating from 8.5.2.x to 8.5.3 requires an uninstall and reinstall of IBM Traveler, as well as the removal of the standalone IBM® Installer application.

If you have Lotus Notes® Traveler 8.5.2.x installed on your Android phone, when you update to 8.5.3, IBM® Installer will guide you through the process of uninstalling the 8.5.2.x version, installing the 8.5.3 version, and then removing the IBM® Installer application.

After migrating from 8.5.3.2 to 8.5.3 Upgrade Pack 1, some IBM Traveler icons will disappear on Android 2.2.1 versions.

Application icons can disappear on some devices, or appear with the wrong icon. This is a problem with the device. To correct, you should uninstall and reinstall IBM Traveler on the device.

Uninstall

Table 3. Uninstall issues
Problem Details
After uninstalling IBM Traveler from the device, some unusable data remains on the SDcard. For Android 2.2, the directory on the SDcard used by IBM Traveler to store data is specified by the Android OS, and is supposed to be deleted by the OS when the application is uninstalled. On some devices, this data may remain on the SDcard after uninstall. The data that remains on the SDcard is encrypted and inaccessible since the key is removed during the uninstallation. As a result, the data can safely be deleted by the user if they need to regain space on the card.
Password policy could be modified after uninstall. For Android 2.2, the length of the password you are required to set may be affected by enabling and disabling the IBM Traveler device administrator. Some devices may continue to require a long password even after the device administrator is disabled.

Mail

Table 4. Mail issues
Problem Details

Soft reset may cause mail syncing and refresh.

Performing a soft reset of the client device may cause mail to sync with the server and refresh.

Size limitations with inline images and message bodies.

The file size limit for inline images depends on the device's available memory. The limit can range from 1MB for older devices to 10MB for newer devices. Message bodies can be truncated based on device attributes and, regardless of device attributes, can be no larger than 2MB. If a message body or inline image exceeds these limits, a message in the mail body stating that it has reached its maximum size displays.

Limitations with attachments.

Attachments greater than 10MB will not be synced to the device. In addition, mail message bodies greater than 10MB will be truncated.

Mail notifications do not appear if mail is received in a IBM Traveler folder.

If mail is received within a folder in IBM Traveler, the new mail notification will not display.

Mail does not work with personal groups.

Because we do not support the synchronization of groups, mail sent to a personal group (one not defined in the Domino® server's address book) is not delivered and is not able to be sent.

Replied to and Forwarded to notifications are not shown on the device

This is a known issue and is being worked on.

Calendar

Table 5. Calendar issues
Problem Details

Limitations with contact names in calendar events.

No actions can be taken on attendee contact names. In addition, available actions on meetings do not include an option to send comments to the meeting chair.

Limitations with searching calendar events.

You cannot search calendar entries.

Privacy information is not displayed.

Information regarding whether an event is public or private is not available.

Event descriptions cannot display rich text.

Event descriptions are currently not sent as HTML formatted strings to the Android client. As a result, event descriptions cannot be displayed in rich text.

Cannot reschedule all instances of a recurring event to a different date.

This feature is unavailable in this release. Use the IBM® Notes® client to perform this action.

Not all instances of a repeating meeting display.

If the user creates an event from the device, the IBM Traveler server truncates the event to either 10 instances if there is a yearly repeat rule, or 250 instances otherwise.

Calendar entries past the year 2067, on both the device and the server, are not synchronized.

Invites are not sent to personal groups.

Because we do not support the synchronization of groups, calendar invites sent to a personal group (one not defined in the Domino® server's address book) are not delivered and are not able to be sent.

Attachments are missing from calendar notices.

Calendar attachments are not yet supported by IBM Traveler Server. As a result, attachments have been removed from calendar notices in the IBM Verse Mail inbox until calendar attachments are fully supported by the server.
