How do I install the client on an Android device?

The IBM Verse client provides a simple, easy-to-use interface with a minimal number of additional configuration settings required.

The client allows users to customize how they are notified when new data arrives. Depending on device capabilities, users can set the device to vibrate, display a visual indicator, or play a sound when a new mail message arrives. The client also allows for customization of how much data to sync with the device to optimize the use of device memory.

You can download and install the IBM Verse client on an Android 4.0 or later device from the Google Play store.

The following methods are supported methods for downloading the IBM Verse client to an Android device:

  • Google Play store (recommended)
  • Over-the-air (OTA) connection
  • Mail attachment
  • Bluetooth
  • Removable memory card
Use the following steps to download and install the IBM Verse client from the IBM Verse user home page (if necessary).
  1. Download the IBM Verse client. You can download the IBM Verse client from the IBM Verse user home page using the following procedure:
    1. Turn on your mobile device.
    2. Launch the device browser.
    3. Go to the IBM Verse user home page at http://hostname/traveler.
    4. Press Download the IBM Verse client for Android from the app store. The Google Play store opens.

  2. Install the IBM Verse client.
    1. After the the installation completes, select Open from the Google Play app on your device, to start the configuration wizard.
    2. Choose the My company's server or the IBM SmartCloud connection option.
    3. If you choose My company's server, enter the server address used for connecting to your IBM Traveler server. If you use a custom port number for the connection, then enter the server name using a format like the following example:
      traveler.server.com:8880
You do not need to specify HTTPS to utilize SSL. However, a non-SSL connection requires that you explicitly type HTTP:// before the server address. If your server uses the standard ports 443 for SSL or 80 for HTTP, then the additional port is not needed. It is strongly recommended that you secure the connection used by IBM Verse clients. This is most commonly done using an SSL connection but can also be accomplished by using a secure Virtual Private Network that is compatible with the mobile device. If the connection is not secured by one of these methods that provides encryption, then the data exchanged between the mobile client and the connection end point, including user ID and password data, could be susceptible to eavesdropping.
    4. Enter your user ID and password and select Log In.
Note: If the default browser was used to download the IBM Verse client, the server and user ID fields are automatically populated.
    5. Select the applications you want to sync.
    6. Select Next.
    7. If you are prompted to allow permissions for the Verse application, select the allow button to grant access as desired.
  3. If your administrator has configured IBM Verse to enforce a device password, you may be prompted to provide and verify a device screen lock password. Note that the device passcode or PIN code is not the same as your IBM® Verse login password. It is used to lock the screen on your device after a specific amount of inactivity. The strength of the password varies depending on how your company configures mobile device policies.
