Migration and upgrade planning

Review the process for migrating or upgrading from your current version of IBM Sametime® to V9.0.1.

The process used for upgrading from a previous version of Sametime depends on the version you are currently using:

• Upgrading from Sametime 9

  You can upgrade Sametime 9 servers directly to V9.0.1 by running the newer installation programs in-place on the servers in your current deployment.

• Migrating from Sametime 8.5.x

  Because of changes to WebSphere® Application Server architecture, it is not possible to perform an in-place upgrade from Sametime 8.5.x (based on WebSphere 7.0.0) to Sametime 9 (based on WebSphere 8.5.5). Instead, you must deploy Sametime 9 separately from your 8.5.x deployment and then reproduce any custom configuration items to the Sametime 9 deployment.

  Deploy Sametime 9 separately so that users can continue working in Sametime 8.5.2x while you migrate data and recreate environment settings and product customizations. When the Sametime 9 deployment is ready for production use, you can redirect clients to Sametime 9 and shut down the Sametime 8.5.2x deployment.
