Getting started
This information provides an overview for network administrators planning to install HCL SafeLinx. It contains the minimum information that is needed to get you started. For detailed information about installing HCL SafeLinx, see the installation information in the section adminguide/admin_guide.html.
Preparing the network environment
Preparation of your network environment depends on the setup of specific resources and the requirements of your operating system.
MNC carrier connection
Additional MNCs can be added of the same type for different network optimizations or for non-IP networks. Use the SafeLinx Administrator to administer these resources after installation is complete.

- Preparing the network environment
  Preparation of your network environment depends on the setup of specific resources and the requirements of your operating system.
  - SafeLinx Client addressing for the VPN
    An MNI reserves an IP address in a subnet as its own and this address is the SafeLinx Server's point-of-presence on your organization's wired LAN network. How that IP address is assigned and how IP traffic is routed are determined by MNI configuration options.
  - MNC carrier connection
    Additional MNCs can be added of the same type for different network optimizations or for non-IP networks. Use the SafeLinx Administrator to administer these resources after installation is complete.
  - Firewall issues
    A sample topology of a SafeLinx Server installation might contain two firewalls. The firewalls are used to block all unwanted connections from the Internet and from the intranet. Enable only known connections to and from the SafeLinx Server in the firewalls.
- Installing
  One final worksheet is needed to help you gather the information for verifying a successful installation. You need to define at least one user that is a SafeLinx Client who can connect to the SafeLinx Server.

In a typical installation environment, the network carrier connects to the enterprise network through the firewall. Then, the SafeLinx Server connects to the enterprise network through an IP-based connection, such as an Ethernet adapter. Some configuration settings, such as the maximum transmission unit (MTU), are network-dependent. Make sure the software, physical port, and line drivers for the network connections you want to deploy are successfully installed.

If you want to add additional MNCs to provide network support for a carrier other than an IP-based network, use the SafeLinx Administrator to administer those resources after installation is complete. You can add MNCs for non-IP networks and add MNCs of the same type for different network optimizations.
