Extending Informix®Beyond standard relational database objects, HCL Informix® can be extended to handle specialized data types, access methods, routines, and other objects. Informix® includes many built-in extensions that are fully integrated in the database server. Informix® also provides DataBlade® modules, which are packages of extended database objects for a particular purpose and that are installed separately from the database server. Alternatively, you can create your own user-defined objects for Informix®.

Registration

The R-tree secondary access method extension is automatically registered when needed unless you chose not to install database extensions when you installed the Informix® database server software.

Registration normally occurs when you register a dependent DataBlade® module or extension, that is, one that can only be registered if the R-tree secondary access method extension has been previously registered. The dependent DataBlade module or extension first signals to BladeManager that it depends on the R-tree secondary access method extension. BladeManager then registers the R-tree secondary access method extension before it registers the dependent DataBlade module.

The dependent DataBlade module or extension usually contains the definition of the user-defined data type that the R-tree access method can index.
