AppScan Source for Development server mode and local mode

The AppScan® Source for Development plug-ins can be used with or without an AppScan Enterprise Server. In server mode, you connect to the server to run scans and access shared data, just as in previous product versions. In the new local mode, AppScan Source for Development runs without ever connecting to an AppScan Enterprise Server - and you cannot access shared items such as filters, scan configurations, and custom rules.

After installing AppScan Source for Development and launching one of its actions or opening one of its views, a message will open asking if you want to use an AppScan Enterprise Server. This setting can be changed later in the General preferencesGeneral preferences.
Note: This message will not appear if you have upgraded AppScan Source for Development from Version 8.x or earlier. In this case, AppScan Source for Development will automatically run in server mode until you change the preference setting.

Running in server mode

When using an Enterprise Server, you can access shared items such as filters, scan configurations, and custom rules. In addition, one menu item is available to you that are not available when running in local mode:

  • Security Analysis > HCL AppScan Source > Log Out from Server allows you to log out of the AppScan Enterprise Server. If you are using a floating scanning license, this action releases it, allowing other team members to acquire licenses when they need them.

Running in local mode

In this mode, you cannot access shared items such as filters, scan configurations, and custom rules. In addition, one menu item is available to you that is not available when running in server mode: Security Analysis > HCL AppScan Source > Release Scanning License allows you to release a floating scanning license.

Important: If you are using a floating license in local mode, you must still have a connection to the license server to be able to use AppScan Source for Development. This is not a requirement when using a nodelocked license.
Note: When you are running in local mode, you have full AppScan Source permissions.
