Use this information to improve HCL Domino® server, Domino Web server, and messaging performance through the use of resource balancing and activity trends, Server.Load commands, advanced database properties, cluster statistics, and the Server Health Monitor.
The Server.Load tool
Server.Load is a capacity-planning tool that you use to run tests, also called "scripts" and "workloads," against a targeted Domino® server to measure server capacity and response metrics.
Running the built-in Server.Load workloads
Server.Load contains numerous built-in workloads and initialization workloads.
Idle workload
The Idle workload establishes the highest number of sessions that a Domino® server can support. The test establishes sessions only between a client and server; no Notes® transactions are carried out. No resources other than those required to start a session are used.

- Resource balancing and activity trends
  Domino® server resource utilization can be separated into two types, system activity and user activity. System activity, which includes the level of processor, disk, memory, and network consumption that Domino generates to keep the server running, is a fixed amount of activity, as long as systems are healthy and performing smoothly. Domino servers typically use a modest percentage of their resources to run. The remaining server capacity is used to support user activity, which varies with the usefulness of the data on the server.
- The Server.Load tool
  Server.Load is a capacity-planning tool that you use to run tests, also called "scripts" and "workloads," against a targeted Domino® server to measure server capacity and response metrics.
  - Server.Load agents
    Server.Load includes a set of agents in the file NAMAGENT.NSF, which is initially installed in the data directory on the Domino® Administrator client. The first agent in this list -- Create NotesBench Mail Person Documents -- is used to set up Person documents for the workloads and set the HTTP password. The rest of the agents are used to repair and change the workload setup.
  - Server.Load metrics and messaging statistics
    As you run a test, you can view various script metrics and server statistic metrics and optionally store the test output in a separate file. Server statistic metrics are generated by the Domino® server. Script metrics correspond to Server.Load command names and display the performance of particular commands. For example, if you select the Add metric, the Metrics window displays the results of the Add command.
  - Setting up clients and servers for Server.Load
    To use Server.Load, install the Domino® server on the server under test (SUT) and install the Domino Administration client and the Server Load Utility on each client.
  - Built-in and custom Server.Load scripts
    Server.Load includes a set of built-in scripts. You can also create a custom script from scratch.

    - Cluster Mail Initialization workload
      The Cluster Mail Initialization workload creates a mail database on the server and populates the mail database with a number of notes scaled to the SUT.
    - Cluster Mail workload and test preparation
      The Cluster Mail workload executes Notes® transactions that model a cluster for mail users at sites relying on a two-way Domino® cluster for messaging.
    - DWA85 workload
      The DWA85 workload represents an active iNotes® user in Full Mode sending, retrieving, and deleting mail from a browser.
    - DWA85Lite workload
      The DWA85Lite workload represents an active iNotes® user in Lite Mode sending, retrieving, and deleting mail from a browser.
    - DWA85 Initialization workload
      The DWA85 Initialization workload creates a set of mail databases on the server and populates them with mail. The mail databases are populated with the number of notes (messages) specified in the NOTES.INI variable NumMailNotesPerUser. When you set NB_MailRealFromField=1, the mail messages appear to be from other valid users. Next, the workload sets the preferences, reads five messages from the newly populated inbox, and replies to all five by setting a random name as the sender from the range of valid users in the Domino® Directory.
    - R5IMAP Initialization workload
      The R5IMAP Initialization workload creates and populates the IMAP mail file with SMTP messages, initializes the mail file, and then converts it to IMAP.
    - R5IMAP workload
      The R5IMAP workload models an active IMAP mail user logging in once, then receiving and sending mail. The script contains an average of 15 minutes of waiting, so an average user will execute this test no more than four times an hour. For each iteration of the script, IMAP mail messages are retrieved, one SMTP message is sent, and a number of LDAP lookup requests are executed based on the value of the NumMessageRecipients script variable. The SMTP messages sent by each test user are delivered to the mail databases of other test users on the SUT.
    - R6IMAP Initialization workload
      The R6IMAP Initialization workload opens a mail database on the server and populates the mail database. The template that is used to create the mail databases should be specified in the NOTES.INI variable MailTemplate.
    - R6IMAP workload
      The R6IMAP workload executes Domino® transactions that model a server for mail users at sites that rely on IMAP mail for communication. Not only does this test stress the IMAP protocol by receiving mail messages, but also exercises SMTP and LDAP by sending SMTP messages to a number of recipients and performing LDAP lookups on those recipients.
    - iNotes® Initialization workload
      The iNotes® Initialization workload creates a set of mail databases on the server and populates them with mail. The mail databases are populated with the number of notes (messages) specified in the NOTES.INI variable NumMailNotesPerUser.
    - R5iNotes workload
      iNotes® is the Web client for Web-based access to Domino® messaging and Personal Information Management (PIM) capabilities.
    - R6iNotes workload
      iNotes® is the Web client for Web-based access to Domino® messaging and Personal Information Management (PIM) capabilities.
    - NRPC Mail Initialization workload
      Use the NRPC Mail Initialization workload to prepare for the R5 Simple Mail Routing workload and the R6 Mail Routing workload. The NRPC Mail Initialization workload creates the mail databases for the R5 Simple Mail Routing workload and the R6 Mail Routing workload.
    - R5 Simple Mail Routing workload
      The R5 Simple Mail Routing workload models an active Notes® mail user receiving and sending mail, composing and sending meeting invitations, and scheduling appointments. The script contains an average of 15 minutes of waiting; therefore, an average user runs this test no more than four times an hour.
    - R6 Mail Routing workload
      The R6Mail Routing workload models an active user on a client reading and sending mail, using the calendar and scheduling features to schedule an appointment, send an invitation, and send an RSVP to an invitation.
    - N8Mail Initialization workload
      Use the N8Mail Initialization workload to prepare for the N8Mail workload and the N7Mail workload. This workload creates the mail databases needed to run both workloads.
    - N8Mail and N7Mail workloads
      The N8Mail and N7Mail workloads model an active user on a Notes® 8 client and Notes 7 client respectively, acting on a Domino® 8 server performing the same set of calendaring and mail operations. An average user will run this script four times per hour.
    - SMTP and POP3 Initialization workload
    - SMTP and POP3 workload
      The SMTP and POP3 workload models an active user receiving and sending mail over SMTP and POP3. The script contains an average of 10 minutes of waiting, so an average user will run this test no more than six times an hour.
    - The Sametime® workloads
      The Domino® Administrator client contains three HCL Sametime® workloads.
    - Idle workload
      The Idle workload establishes the highest number of sessions that a Domino® server can support. The test establishes sessions only between a client and server; no Notes® transactions are carried out. No resources other than those required to start a session are used.
    - R5 Shared Database workload
      The R5 Shared Database workload models active users performing shared database operations that include performing view operations, navigating unread documents, reading documents, and adding or updating documents in a shared database.
    - Web Idle workload
      The Web Idle workload models a Web browser user accessing the home page on the SUT. The script contains a one-minute wait, so an average user runs this script approximately 60 times an hour.
    - Web Mail Initialization workload

    - Web Mail workload
      The Web Mail workload models an active Web Mail user using a browser to send, retrieve, and delete Notes® mail.
    - Workload Data Collection and Workload Data Rollup scripts
      The Server.Load Workload Data Rollup feature is adapted from the NotesBench data rollup feature and allows test data from a group of test drivers and an SUT to be combined into a single data file for analysis. While a workload runs, the Workload Data Collection custom script, SHSTAT.SCR, collects performance data from the SUT. When the workload is complete, the Workload Data Rollup script rolls up the performance data.
  - Server.Load commands
    Server.Load scripts consist of statements in a simple command language, the Server.Load specification language.

- Tuning Domain Indexer performance
  Each time the Domain Indexer task runs, it looks in the Domain Catalog for new databases that have the Include in multi database indexing property enabled. It then looks for documents and files in existing databases and file systems that are new or changed since the last time it ran, and adds them to the Domain Index.

Idle workload

The Idle workload establishes the highest number of sessions that a Domino® server can support. The test establishes sessions only between a client and server; no Notes® transactions are carried out. No resources other than those required to start a session are used.

About this task

The resulting capacity metric is the maximum number of user sessions that can exist concurrently. You can use this metric to help set up and configure the test environment.

Running the Idle Workload test

Procedure

Make sure that you already set up clients and servers for Server.Load.
On the Domino® Administrator client, start Server.Load by running SLOAD.EXE from the program directory.
In the Test Type field, choose Built-In, and then choose Idle Workload from the list.

Click the Script Variables tab, and enter these values:

MailServer	Enter the canonical name of the mail server -- for example, CN=MailServer1/O=Renovations
MaxSessions	Enter the thread capacity of the client. The maximum is 1500.

Click the Test Parameters tab. If you are running the test on multiple clients, increment the value of the Starting Thread No. parameter when you run the test on each client.
Optional: Click the Stop Conditions tab to set a stop condition.
Click Execute.
Optional: Select metrics to monitor.
Optional: In the Server to receive console commands field, enter the name of the SUT.
Click Start Test.
