Setting up a server as a pass-through server

Set up a server as a pass-through server to enable users and other servers to route through it to connect to a pass-through destination server.

About this task

Use HCL Domino® configuration settings to assign a server as a pass-through server.
Note: Support for direct dialup modem (X.PC) connections is available only in releases of Domino® earlier than release 8.5. You can use Domino® Administrator 8.5 to configure and maintain direct dialup modem support only on servers running releases earlier than 8.5.

Procedure

  1. From the Domino® Administrator, click the Configuration tab.
  2. Click Server > All Server Documents.
  3. Open the server document for the server that you want to set up as a pass-through server and click Edit Server.
  4. Click the Security tab and in the Passthru Use section, specify the following fields.
Table 1. Pass-through server fields and descriptions

    Field

    Description

    Access this server

If this server is not a pass-through destination, leave this field blank.

    Route through

Specifies the names of the users, groups, and servers allowed to connect to a destination server through this server. When this field is blank (the default), the server does not allow pass-through connections.

Enter an asterisk (*) to provide pass-through access for all users and servers, even those not listed in the Domino® Directory. Enter a hierarchical name with an asterisk as the common name to provide access for all users and servers certified by a particular organization or organizational unit. For example, the entry */Renovations allows access to all users in the Renovations organization.

Separate multiple entries with commas or semicolons.

Entries in this field are granted pass-through access, even if denied general access to the server in the Server Access section of the Server document Security tab.

    Cause calling

Specifies the names of users, groups, and servers allowed to use the modem on this server to connect to a remote destination server. By default, this field is blank and the server prohibits all incoming connections from generating calls to other servers. Enter an asterisk (*) to allow incoming connections from any source to initiate a call to a destination server.

Note: If you allow incoming connections from any source to initiate calls, when recording the event in the Passthru Connections view of the HCL Notes® Log, Domino® indicates only that the connecting client was not authenticated, rather than specifying the name of the source.

    Destinations allowed

Specifies the names of the remote servers this server can connect to as pass-through destinations.

By default, this field is blank and the server allows routing to all servers configured as pass-through destinations. Adding entries to this field restricts pass-through access from this server to the specified destination servers only.

  5. Click Save & Close.
  6. Set up servers as pass-through destinations.
  7. Create pass-through Connection documents as necessary to connect the pass-through server to destination servers that do not share the same LAN.
