    Servers must connect to each other to exchange data, for example to replicate databases and exchange mail. You can create connections between servers across a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN), by using a pass-through server (a server that acts as an intermediary server between a client and its destination), or over the Internet. Create a Server Connection document whenever you need to establish any new or additional server connections. You can modify this document when necessary.

    The HCL Domino® network is compatible with NetBIOS, a set of IBM® session-layer LAN services that has evolved into a standard interface that applications use to access transport-layer network protocols.

The Domino mail server is the backbone of an organization's messaging infrastructure, acting both as an Internet mail server and an HCL Notes® mail server. Domino provides standards-based Internet messaging through its support of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), and Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME). At the same time, Domino supports Notes mail through the use of Notes routing protocols -- Notes remote procedure calls (NRPC) -- and the Notes rich text message format.

Notes pre-installation checklist

Review this checklist before starting HCL Notes® install or upgrade.

Procedure

Review the system requirements for software and hardware specifications in the related links.
Read the platform-specific considerations topics listed in the related links.
Determine how you want to install. For example, will users install the client themselves using an install kit or a Smart Upgrade procedure, will you use a silent install to deploy Notes® to many users, will you install Notes® users for a multi-user or single user environment, and if installing on Microsoft™ Windows™, will you use the Notes-only installer or the Allclient (Notes®, HCL Domino® Administrator and HCL Domino® Designer clients) installer.
Optional: Configure Domino® policy settings, NOTES.INI file settings, and other settings for users. See topics such as Policies, Pushing NOTES.INI settings or location document settings, and Pushing Eclipse preference settings.
Optional: Modify the Notes® install kit, and optionally use an MSI tuner to create and use a transform file, to specify which install features and methods will be available as part of the install procedure.
Optional: Install or upgrade your HCL Connections™ server if you will be enabling users to access activity documents from Notes®. For Connections server setup, see Connections documentation.
Put the Notes® install kit in an accessible location.
Uninstall any Notes® beta instances.
Shut down all applications before installing or upgrading to this release of Notes®, including anti-virus software.
Install Notes® on the user client systems or communicate to users how they are to install the new Notes® release.
