Creating a pass-through connection

After you set up the pass-through and destination servers, you can set up servers to connect to pass-through servers. Creating a pass-through connection enables the server to forward requests from users and other servers to connect to a specified destination server.

Before you begin

Before creating a pass-through connection, verify that the current server is not configured to use a default pass-through server. When a server is configured to use a default pass-through server and it receives a request to connect to a destination server for which no other connection is defined, it attempts to route through the named server to the requested destination. If the named server is not set up to allow pass-through connections to the requested destination server, the pass-through attempt places an unnecessary load on both servers.

Complete these steps to verify that the server is not configured to use a default pass-through server:

  1. From the IBM® Domino® Administrator, click the Configuration tab.
  2. Click Server > Current Server document.
  3. Click the Basics tab and expand the Server Location Information section.
  4. Verify that the Passthru server field is empty.
  5. If the field is empty, complete the procedure to create a pass-through connection..

About this task

The pass-through connection document specifies the server to use for pass-through, but does not define how to connect to the pass-through server. If a server does not have a direct connection to the pass-through server over the LAN, you must create a separate connection document to define the path to the pass-through server.

Procedure

  1. From the Domino Administrator, click the Configuration tab.
  2. Select the connecting server's Domino Directory in the Use Directory on field.
  3. Click Server and then click Connections.
  4. Click Add Connection.
  5. Complete the following fields:
Table 1. Pass-through connection fields and descriptions

    Field

    Description

    Connection type

    Select Pass-through server

    Source server

The name of the server connecting to the pass-through server

    Source domain

The name of the connecting server's domain

Use pass-through server or hunt group

The name of the pass-through server or hunt group that this connection uses to reach the destination server

    Usage priority

    Choose one:

    • Normal (default) - Select this option if this document defines the primary path to a server.
    • Low - Select this option to define a backup path to a server.
Note: You can force Domino to use a specific port by specifying it in the connection document and setting the Usage priority field to Normal.

    Destination server

The name of the destination server to connect to through the pass-through server.

    Destination domain

The name of the destination server's domain

  6. On the Replication/Routing and Schedule tabs, define the tasks you want to run and select the times you want the server to call its destination.
  7. Click Save and Close.
