This section describes how to use the tools and features that help you monitor a Domino® system.
Monitoring a cluster
Domino® provides several ways to find out what is happening in a cluster and make adjustments to keep the cluster running smoothly and efficiently, so that no server is overloaded. You can monitor failover, workload balancing, and cluster replication to see how efficiently the cluster is running.

You can display a list of cluster members and their availability from either the Domino® or Web Administrator, or from the server console.

        One way to monitor what is happening in a cluster is to collect statistics in the Monitoring Results database. You can then view this information from the Domino® Administrator or in the Monitoring Results database itself.
      - Viewing Cluster Manager events and statistics
        After distributing databases and mail servers to balance the workload, you should track the cluster events and statistics to be sure that the workload is acceptable and that failover occurs as expected. If the statistics show a problem, you may have to make some adjustments.
      - Viewing cluster replication events and statistics
        You can view cluster replication events and statistics from the Domino® Administrator, from the Web Administrator, or in the server log file. You can see information on cluster replication activity, workload, and status, and use statistics to find replication backlogs.
      - Detecting replication delays within a cluster
        When a database on one server in a cluster is overdue to be replicated to another server, entries are created in the server log. A group of cluster currency statistics are also available to help proactively spot delays in database replication.
      - Using Tell commands to display cluster replication information
        You can use Tell server commands to display additional information about cluster replication. This information helps you determine whether to make any changes to the way you configured cluster replication or to the way you balanced the workload in the cluster. The information is displayed on the server console.
      - Monitoring all the servers in a cluster at the same time
        You can use the Domino® server monitor to monitor all the servers in a cluster at once. You can decide what information you want to monitor and how to display that information. You can monitor the cluster while you monitor other Domino servers. To tell Domino which servers to monitor and what information to monitor on each server, you create or customize a monitoring profile.
    - Monitoring slow or unresponsive servers with the Domino® Diagnostic Probe
      Use the Domino® Diagnostic Probe (DDP), a Java™ utility provided by IBM® Support, to monitor Domino 8.x and later servers that have been intermittently slow or unresponsive. The probe is a Java process (dbopen.jar) that runs in the background. The utility probes a specific Domino server over time by invoking database open transactions. If the probe detects a slow response, it will invoke Notes® System Diagnostic (NSD) to gather diagnostic data. This data is used by IBM Support to troubleshoot and determine the cause or causes of the performance degradation.
    - Monitoring quality of service
      Quality of Service, or QoS, is designed to react to the general operation of a Domino® server in order to keep that server functioning reliably and always available. If QoS detects that a server is not responding or hung, QoS probing can be configured to email an administrator about the problem and/or automatically terminate the server and restart it. QoS log information can also be useful for analysis by IBM® Support.

Displaying a list of cluster members and their availability

You can display a list of cluster members and their availability from either the Domino® or Web Administrator, or from the server console.

From the Domino® Administrator or the Web Administrator

Procedure

In the Server pane, expand either All Servers or Clusters.
Select the server you want.
Click the Server > Statistics tab.
In the statistics list, expand Server to see the availability index and the availability threshold of the server you selected.
Expand Cluster > Member, and then expand the name of each cluster server to see the availability of the servers in the cluster.

From the Domino® Administrator only

About this task

You can also see the availability of each cluster member individually by doing the following:

Procedure

In the Server pane, expand either All Servers or Clusters.
Right-click the server you want, and choose Server Properties.
In the Server Properties box, click the Cluster tab.

Results

The Cluster tab in the Server Properties box shows you the name of the cluster, the availability threshold and the availability index of the server you selected, the port that is used for cluster traffic, how frequently cluster probes are sent, how many cluster probes the Cluster Manager has sent since the last time the server was started, and the names and availability indexes of all the servers in the cluster.

From the server console

About this task

Send the following command from the server console:

show cluster

This command displays the name of the cluster, several statistics for the current server, and the names and availability indexes of all the servers in the cluster.
