Upgrading the production databases

Before you begin

Before upgrading production databases, make a backup copy of the database. See Database backup procedures and schedules

About this task

Upgrade from your original production databases to the production upgrade set. The process is similar to the process for upgrading the test bed.

When the upgrade process is initiated, HCL Compass temporarily locks the databases to prevent other transactions from accessing during the upgrade process. If someone tries to log into HCL Compass, they will be denied access. After the upgrade process completes successfully, the database locks are released, and users can connect to the database. In some cases, the upgrade might not complete successfully, leaving the databases in a locked state. If this occurs, restore the affected user database using a backup that was created just before upgrading it.

Procedure

  1. Start the Maintenance Tool. Click Start > Programs >  > HCL Compass Maintenance Tool.
  2. From the Existing Connections list, select the connection to the schema repository that you want to upgrade.
  3. On the Maintenance Tool menu, click Schema Repository > Upgrade > Selected Connection.
  4. At the prompt to upgrade user databases, click Yes to continue.
  5. Log in with Super User privileges.
  6. Select the feature level and enter the properties of the schema repository to which you are upgrading. To perform an in-place upgrade, specify the properties of the Source Schema Repository in the New Schema Repository area. Then click Next.
  7. At the prompt to upgrade the schema repository, click Yes to continue.
  8. Enter the properties for the first user database to which you are upgrading, and click Next. Repeat until you have associated all the user databases. Click Finish. HCL Compass upgrades your schema repository and user databases, and notifies you when the process is complete. It records all actions in a text file in the \Temp directory.
  9. Verify that the upgrade process completed successfully:
    1. Read the status message carefully (scroll until you reach the end of the message). Click Done.
    2. Test the application. Enter a few test records of each record type and move them though the entire state model to verify that it is working correctly.
  10. After verifying that the upgrade completed successfully:
    1. Keep the original production databases locked or remove them, which prevents users from using them.
    2. (Optional) Discard the test bed and test upgrade set.
