Data types for OLT personalization fields

Personalization fields that are defined in an Output List Table (OLT) are referred to as OLT personalization fields. OLT personalization fields specify a data type as either numeric or string. The data type that is specified depends on the data type of the database field to which the OLT personalization field is mapped. However, you can manually change an OLT personalization field data type.

Note: You cannot change the data type specified for Built-in or Constant personalization fields.

The data type specified for an OLT personalization field can affect how the field displays in document previews and how personalization rules and advanced scripts evaluate the field. For example, a rule or script that evaluates customer age as a numeric value fails if the data type of the personalization field that provides customer age is configured as a string.

To specify a data type for an OLT personalization field, you must either upload an OLT that defines the field or manually specify the data type. You upload an OLT by completing a production run of the Campaign flowchart that defines the OLT. You can manually set the data type through the list of personalization fields that you can access from the Deliver Settings page.

When you define the data type for an OLT personalization field for the first time, Deliver retains the data type selection. The personalization field data type is available when you preview communications that contain the field, even if the communication is not associated with the OLT that defined the field originally.

Manually changing the data type for OLT personalization fields provides a way to correct errors in personalization field definitions and might help with troubleshooting personalization rules and advance scripts for email.

In some cases, Deliver designates the data type of an OLT personalization field as Unknown type. You can update the data type designation for the field manually by updating the personalization field properties. You can also update the data type for the field by uploading the OLT that defines the field.
