Guidelines for providing an unsubscribe landing page

Deliver does not provide a pre-configured landing page to process email unsubscribe requests. You must configure a web page to handle unsubscribe requests from email recipients. You have the option to process such requests by creating a landing page hosted by Unica, or you can create an unsubscribe page on your corporate web site.

Consider the following guidelines for providing an unsubscribe option in your personalized email and a hosted opt-out landing page.

  • Include a standard statement in email templates about unsubscribing or opting out in the email templates. The statement should be designed to include a droppable area where you can configure a hyperlink to a landing page.
  • Create a landing page to submit the opt-out request to HCL Unica. You must also create a second landing page to display a message confirming that the message recipient will no longer receive promotional mailings in the future.
  • Use the Deliver Message Editor to configure the unsubscribe link to the opt-out landing page.

Deliver stores landing page responses until your local installation requests them

When an email recipient completes the online unsubscribe form that you have provided, Deliver stores the request information until your local Deliver installation retrieves it. Deliver never pushes information to your network. A component called the Response and Contact Tracker (RCT) is part of your local Deliver installation. The RCT is configured to request email response data, including unsubscribe requests, on a regular basis. By default, the RCT makes such a request every 5 minutes.

For more information about the RCT and its operation, see the Unica Deliver Startup and Administrator's Guide.

Landing page responses are stored in your local Deliver tables

Deliver records landing page responses in the local Deliver system tables, in the UCC_Response table.

Information submitted through Unica-hosted landing pages is recorded in the UCC_ResponseAttr table, with the response type 14. This response type is used to identify all landing pages responses, not only unsubscribe responses. The exact data returned depends on how you have configured your opt-out landing page. The UCC_ResponseAttr table allows you to record a variety of response attributes.

For more information about the local Deliver system tables see the Unica Deliver System Tables.

Use your internal systems to process responses and update your mailing lists

When you create an unsubscribe landing page to allow email recipients to opt-out, you must use your own internal systems to process the requests and remove the individuals from your mailing lists. You can use flowcharts in Campaign to extract information collected through the opt-out landing page form that you create. Depending on how you configure the unsubscribe form, you can associate various attributes with an opt-out request. Attribute data for landing pages is stored in the UCC_ResponseAttr table.
