Configuring content with multiple variations

To configure content that provides multiple variations, add multiple digital assets to a single content element and specify a personalization field to act as a variation field. The personalization field maps to a recipient characteristic defined in an Output List Table (OLT). When Deliver assembles an email or landing page, the value of the variation field that is rendered for the email recipient determines which asset to display. If no values match, Deliver displays the asset that is configured as the default content.

Before you begin

Before you begin, you must define extra values for the personalization field that is specified as the variation field. The variation field must be an OLT personalization field. You define additional values for personalization fields on the Deliver Personalization Fields page. The values that you add as properties to the personalization field appear as available variation values in drop-down lists for variations in the Message Editor.

Go to Settings > Deliver Settings and display a list of all personalization fields. Click a personalization field name to edit properties.

About this task

Note: Defining a reference label is optional. Define a reference label if you plan to add the content to an email or landing page by reference.

Procedure

  1. Right-click a folder in the Content Library. Select New > Content. A new content tab displays in the editing section.

The Folder field indicates where the new content element is created. Depending on your user permissions, you might be able to move it to a different folder later.

If you add content by using the New menu, content is always added to the Default folder.

  2. Name the content element. Use either of the following methods.
    • Double-click the tab name and enter a new name.
    • Right-click the tab name, select Rename, and enter a new name for the content element in the Properties window.
    Note: You cannot use the characters > < / \ ? | " * in the content element name.
  3. Select Dynamic content.
  4. Select a variation field.
The drop-down list displays only personalization fields for which multiple values are configured.
  5. Define content variations.
A blank variation displays by default.
    1. Double-click in the Field Value column. Enter or select a variation field value. The drop-down list contains the list of values that are defined as properties of the personalization field that is specified as the variation field.
    2. Specify the asset that displays for the specified variation field value.
      • Browse to an external image, HTML, or text file.
      • Create a new text or HTML file. Click Create new file. Enter a name for the new file. Select a file type. Enter text or HTML content. Click OK to save and close.
Select or create the same type of file for all variations. Do not mix content types, which are also referred to as MIME types.
Note: Previews of the uploaded asset display only after you save.
  6. (Required) Select a default variation. The default content displays if the personalization characteristics for the email recipient do not match the variation value for any of the other variations.
The default variation always moves to the top of the list of variations.
  7. (Optional) Define a reference label to identify the content element.
  8. Click Save Changes Save changes icon.
