Resolving directory lookups containing ambiguous or group names

You can specify whether to reject ambiguous names that are returned during directory lookups. If directory lookups are successful and multiple matches are returned for the user name, you can specify whether or not to reject the ambiguous names. When ambiguous names are rejected, mail is not sent to the email addresses for the ambiguous user names.

About this task

Use the Configuration Settings document or the NOTES.INI file setting SMTPDenyNotUniqueRcpt to designate whether the ambiguous names are to be rejected. If both settings are used, the NOTES.INI file setting takes precedence over the setting in the Configuration Settings document.

You can also specify whether to allow mail to be sent to a group name returned during directory lookups. If the directory lookups are successful and the recipient name is a unique group name, and you deny sending mail to group names, a permanent failure response is returned to the sender of the message indicating the recipient is rejected for policy reasons.

Use the Configuration Settings document or the NOTES.INI file setting SMTPDenyMailToGroups to deny sending mail to groups. If both settings are used, the NOTES.INI file setting takes precedence over the setting in the Configuration Settings document.

The fields Reject ambiguous names and Deny mail to groups are hidden fields that display only when you have enabled the setting Verify that local domain recipients exist in the Domino® Directory.
