Upgrading Notes clients

You can push an upgrade to Notes® clients using Notes Smart Upgrade or other third party mechanism, Smart Upgrade Run-As wizard (SURUNAS), or Upgrade-by-mail. You can also upgrade Notes clients using the Notes installation executable either silently (command line) or using the installer's graphical user interface. The supplied installation executable is used for an initial install or an upgrade install.

Before you begin the Notes client upgrade, do the following:

  • Review the Upgrade Central: Planning your upgrade to Notes and Domino 9.0 on the Notes and Domino® wiki.
  • Review the Considerations topic in this guide specific to your client platform.
  • Close all open applications, including anti-virus software.
  • Ensure that users have Write and Modify permissions to the program directory, data directory, and all associated subdirectories.
  • Have administrative or root access rights required to install/upgrade Notes.
  • If you are upgrading Notes on a Microsoft™ Windows™ system, log in as an administrator or set administrator-level privileges for all users. If administrative rights are not available, enable the setting Always install with elevated privileges.
  • For information about using Smart Upgrade with a Linux™ kit, see Configuring for Lotus Notes® 8.5 SmartUpgrade on Linux using RPMs on the IBM® Support site in the related information.
  • Back up critical files as described in the article Backing up and restoring Notes client data on the Notes and Domino wiki in the related information.
  • Optionally customize the Notes install kit, for example to add a new signed feature or remove a supplied feature.
  • Optionally specify Domino policies to be deployed during upgrade.
